PC Reboots upon network connection

A couple of months ago I accidentally disabled the LAN connection on my PC which is connected directly by cable to my son's PC 6 feet away. When I went into the control panel and told the system to enable the connection it looked like everything was going to work, but then "*dink*" the PC rebooted itself every time I tried. I managed to get the LAN working by unplugging the cable before I re-enabled the connection, then plugged it back in after it managed to enable. It has worked ever since.

This problem has reared its ugly head again. Yesterday I hooked up my Verizon DSL service and when it came time for the software to get the router/modem set up the system went into it's reboot mode and would only finish booting if I turned off the modem power or disconnected the cable. Verizon tech support was no help because everything checked out as far as they were concerned. The system boots fine until just before the desktop appears, then it goes "dink" and starts over. I managed to get it connected by leaving the cable plugged in until right before that point, then quickly unplugged it. After the boot I plugged it back in and it stayed connected. I haven't turned off the PC since then. I can't figure this thing out. I'm using a 3Com network which is built into my ASUS motherboard. Does anybody have ANY suggestions on what to do to fix this aggravating problem?

>> Sounds like protocol stack is corrupted.

Well, I guess that's helpful. It would be even MORE helpful if you tell me what steps to take to fix it. :)

I would disable your onboard Network card and try a PCI Network card instead.
maybe just a problem with the onboard NIC.

Or it could just be your NIC Drivers.
but i'd try the other NIC first just to make sure.

I had a similiar problem as this with an onboard NIC,but it would only restart after browsing,or trying to use like acrobat reader online.

Turned out to be the NIC.

Good Luck.

I don't think it's the driver because I've reinstalled that since the problem started. I'll have to get a NIC and try that.

Nope, a card didn't help either. Hmmm. . . what the heck is going on here. I hope it's not the motherboard.
