My computer randomly shuts off, however, it isn't really off. It looks like the computer loses power because the monitor will go black and have no signal and i will get no tone when pressing keys on the keyboard or mouse. While this is going on, everything in the computer unit is still running.. fans, hdds, leds, etc. i think i might need a new motherboard but im not really sure. its only a year old. can anyone help me out here?

1.8GHz AMD Athlon 2500+
OC'd to 2.2GHz
Abit NF7-S Motherboard
512x2MB Crucial pc3200
350w psu

Going into standby mode? Check the power settings in the Windows Control Panel and tell it not to go into standby, etc. There are also settings in the BIOS that you can change as well.

Does it recover and if it does does it appear that the mouse and keyboard were working?
I would guess that the VGA is failing somewhere. if you have one install a spare VGA card and see if it helps.
Also give us more info on your oc, memory timings voltages etc as it may be a settings issue but still IMO you have a video problem.
Good luck

this was happening before the oc.. but its at 200mhz with an 11 multiplier and 1.8v core.

its not stand by mode, because if it was stand by mode it would recover after pressing the space bar or power button.

another thing i forgot to mention was that the only way to bring it back is to use the reset button.. if i shut it down completely and try to boot it back up it does the same thing (lights on and everything running but nothing going on.. no error beeps or anything).

What brand is your PSU? It could be a failing PSU thats causing your problem. It could also be a heat issue, what are your temps like?

The problem has been solved!! Thank you to all that helped. My computer was at the point where it would would POST and immediately shut down with just the fans running. I couldn't even get into Windows. I replaced my 400w power supply (I think it was POWMAX) with a 400w COOLMAX Taurus (I went with 400w because I thought the power supply I had was 350w). It's now running in top shape with no problems at all. =]

Good to hear. I've had very very very big problems with Powmax. They really give you the impression of a quality product with their PSU chassis but its really just crap. I once had a POWMAX, and it really POWED on me. I turn it on one day in one of my machines and it STARTS BLAZING....LITERALLY GOES ON FIRE. Mind you no overclock, Kingston Memory, top of the line Gigabyte mobo, Maxtor Diamondmax 9 HD. It burnt everything whilst i was in the B'room. I haven't had a problem in any of my other machines since then. That just left a bad taste in my mouth over time.
