Hey everyone, this may sound stupid but I would like to learn. I use PC Probe II on my Ausu mb for the CPU and mainboard temps. I then found HW monitor. In HWmon, it gives me the reading of the CPU/mainb and also the the core temps? What is more important to use, CPU or core temps? My cpu read 40ish and my core temps read 32ish.

Second question, What are average temps for a PII 720 clocked at 3.4ghz on stock volts?

This is a great question! I asked a similar question a few days ago in another thread, but couldn't get a response. My Q9450 @ 3.2GHz idles at 35C while HWMonitor says my cores are more around the 50C mark.

Bump for some answers!

Here is an excerpt from an article I found that explains cpu or case temp and core temps.
"Core 2 Quad and Duo processors have 2 different types of temperature sensors; a CPU case (not computer case) Thermal Diode centered under the Cores, and Digital Thermal Sensors located on each Core. The case Thermal Diode measures Tcase (Temperature case), which is CPU temperature, and the Digital Thermal Sensors measure Tjunction (Temperature junction), which is Core temperature. Since these sensors measure 2 distinct thermal levels, there is a 5c temperature difference between them, which is Tcase to Tjunction Gradient. C2Q's have 1 Tcase and 4 Tjunction sensors, while C2D's have 1 Tcase and 2 Tjunction sensors. Uncalibrated default temperatures are seldom accurate. "

If you do a google search on "Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide - by CompuTronix " you should be able to find the whole article. Great read explaining cpu temps.
