PC prices falling/crashing?

Anyone notice a trend lately with the price of computer parts? I'm seeing a lot of stuff that used to be ungaudly expensive dropping very quickly. Ram especially. I'd have expected it to stay high or go up. Not come down. Anyone else seen this trend? I'm definately not complaining. Heck, when you can pick up 512m of PC2700 ram for a song and a wisper, I'm definately not going to complain one bit. 🙂

Personally, I think it's because most people have figured out PC's and have stopped upgrading for a while. For me, everybody I knew upgraded around the AMD 1600+XP's to 2000+, and when Intel brought out their Northwoods... ever since then, however, people are still satisfied with their equipment.

Basically, nothing that much hardware-demanding is out. I have a 2.0A o/ced to 2.75ghz, 512 DDR, and a GeForce3, and that's going to last me until the end of the year until I even consider upgrading. People with 1600+'s and GeForce4 Ti4200's are in the same position I bet.

Heck, I still haven't sold a computer that has a processor faster than an AMD Athlon XP 1600+. (1.47 gHz) I'm running a 1.4 gHz Athlon for my own system.

I think that most people feel like anything over about 1.0 gHz is fast enough for what they need, and they aren't upgrading.

Tell me about it, I was able to build THREE computers off of newegg.com for under $1500 shipped. Complete with operating systems.

it's about performance "pop". how much performance "pop" does upgrading give the average user these days?? Seriously, not for the hard core gamers but for the average user??

pc systems usually sell with 128 to 256 mb of ram standard. how many people need more than 256 mb of ram?

when i went from 400 mhz PIII to 1 ghz AMD I saw a HUGE performance "pop".

going from 1 ghz to xp 2700 didn't seem to provide as much of a "pop".

weird.

I wish the same held true for video cards...they're still a little high for the top of the line products.

It's all about the performance, unless you're editing videos, doing seriously CPU intensive work, no need to upgrade beyond the 1 ghz mark...

I'm one of those people doing serious computation. PC prices still aren't low enough for me: I want HyperThreading prices to come down from the stratosphere, then I'll say PC prices are good. 🙂

My 1.6a @ 2.133 w/768mb PC2700 should last me for a while...my Ti4200 comes in today, so I'll finally have a decent video card. Just need a bigger HD, and that's it..

I need a video card upgrade myself. Several machines are dying on DX7 games for me. My fastest rig 1.3 celery is more than enough. I'll probably buy a NV35 variant and a 9500Pro once I get my cash in next month 🙂

I'm waiting on HDD/Serial ATA/hyper transport/DDR II/PCI X/DVD-RW/+RW

to arise to make a stable platform out of 🙂 So I'm looking around summer of '04 😛

Ram especially. I'd have expected it to stay high or go up. Not come down.
If you've been following memory prices for the past few years, you would see a pattern. Usually, in February, prices start to drop and usually fall through early-Summer. Then prices, stabilize and stay "fixed" for a few months. Finally, in October (or there-abouts) the prices start to climb again and remain high until February.

I've personally watched this same trend for the past 4 years or so - and expect it will do the same again. Memory is at a great price - but, could still go a little lower. If anyone is considering buying/upgrading, then they should do so before July is over - then, the prices could start to move again. If you're waiting until November before you buy some more memory, expect to pay top-dollar.

I'm still stuck on P3 933Mhz w/2 256Mb of PC2100 memory sticks. Had this for about 3 yrs now. My system slows down whenever there's a lot of action going on in Warcraft III DOTA 2.x :/ Time to upgrade soon...

Your problem is with the VIA chipset with DDR support for P3 😉
Buy a cool 815E B step and be rolling in the coolness of it 🙂

Save the DDR for an Athlon 2700+ 🙂

correction: No game worth anything requires it. Any developer can add all kinds of pretty explosions and nice looking walls, however its the same old game. Things havent evolved much past Halflife, in terms of gameplay.

Still running a 1.3 tbird and 256MB pc133 w/tnt2. I can do anything I need with my comp. I could use more ram, cause when I have everything open some things can get sluggish, and 1GB ddr would definitely help a lot, but I don't NEED to upgrade anything right now.

I don't notice anything different about computer parts prices. Everything is the same it has always been. Ram goes up and down, video cards are always expensive, HDs go down quickly as larger ones are introducted... LCDs are expensive but declining. It's been this way for a long time. You just need to know when to buy certain parts and when not to buy them. Or just be happy with what you have and don't waste money on such a horrible investment. 😛

right... 4000 players at once isnt a major change to the industry... or faction based fighting, or a full flight and physics model, persistant world, high end DX8.1 graphics.

This game has been in dev. for over 4 years, its revolutionary.

Run simcity 4 on a PC that has a city with more than 100,000 people...

Other games on the way: Quake4, Doom3, The next Dark age of camelot expansion, Tribes3, Halo (PC), World of Warcraft. The need is there.

If you do nothing but troll the boards and chat on AOL instant messenger you wouldnt see a need to upgrade tho 😉
