pc power & cooling....why does everybody seem to hate them?

i was wondering why i keep seeing so much negativity directed at the pc power & cooling silencer psu's. i have been looking on google for an hour and cant find a single bad review of the 750w silencer. the only thing i can find is that it isnt as quiet as advertised. links would be appreciated. thx

PC Power & Cooling is on of the few companies that actually has a respctable track record!
if price is no object then you get a well built high end PSU!

If price is an object there are other PSU`s that will also do the job!!

The Silencer can he had for under $200.

Thos of us who use PC Power & Cooling PSU`s in all our riggs have no objection to paying for a PSU that will be operational 5 years down the road!!

What I find rediculous are the reviewers who include the price of the PSU in how they rate the over all PSU!!!

Peace!!

I don't hate them. But since there are other PSUs that are tier 1 as well that are cheaper I use and recommend those. Also the noise is a factor to me - I don't want a turbo-cool for a reason, and the silencer I've heard isn't as quiet as I want.

That's all. Good PSUs yes, but I just feel there are other, better units out there for the money (better in terms of price/performance ratio, not necessarily build quality or whatever).

I have a silencer 750 and have had a pretty good experience with it. i was puzzled as to how this unit could have such rave reviews but the people seemed to hate it. anyways, i have to mount it upside down in my case. is this bad for the PSU? It wouldnt be a problem to drill some new holes but if it isnt going to hurt it then i wont bother. the main thing im worried about is heat but the unit is in a very cool room.

Due to the upside-down mounting issue, i purchased an antec tp3-650 and was planning on selling my silencer 750 but the antec actually forced me to lower my overclock. i believe i was overloading a rail. i switched back to the silencer 750 and viola, everything worked fine. these quads must be tough on psus with multiple rails. im running a q6600 at 3.6ghz w/ an 8800gts (soon to step up to a gtx, then SLI when next gen comes out and the gtx's are cheap) so a good psu is very important for me.

Like the Silencer, the Antec TP3 is actually a Seasonic-built single rail psu.

@ OP - Are you equating "not recommend" with "hate"? Two different things.

I don't think you'll find many people who will claim that they aren't top-notch in terms of quality. The higher end PCP&C units are just much more PSU than the vast majority of people need. If you move lower down the wattage scale, then there are plenty of very good PSUs that are priced more competitively than the PCP&C mid-range ones.

A couple of other reasons why PCP&C PSUs aren't for everyone:
1) They don't offer modular cables on any of their PSUs as far as I know, which is a bit unusual in this day and age.
2) Their PSUs seem to take up more space than a comparable wattage PSU made by other top quality brands. In my case, I wouldn't be able to fit one in my case (I really should have worded that sentence better...). The Silencer 610 is the one I would be in the market for. Unfortunately, due to the atypical dimensions (too long), it simply doesn't fit.
3) Those who value quiet computing appreciate having larger, but lower RPM fans in their PSUs. So I was bit miffed to see that Silencer 750 uses a 80mm fan, especially when 120mm is typical in this segment, with some brands like Enermax and Tt going with even larger, 140mm ones.

john, why is the antec advertised as a triple 12v rail unit? also if i wasnt overloading a rail then i guess that would mean i had a defective unit. is there anything else that could explain why the psu caused me to lose my overclock?

and to amberclad, no i was not confusing hating with not recommending, i was just exaggerating for emphasis 🙂 . i havent been into computer hardware very long so i may be off, but whenever these psus are brought up people seem to bash them for their efficiency (which in all the reviews i have read it scored excellent efficiency ratings), noise (not silent, but not loud in my opinon), or their parent company which i believe is OCZ. seemed a little fishy to me...

i cant spell worth a crap today

Just noticed the specs in your signature, that's a cute rig, I've made a couple pretty similar for friends recently using the ultra microfly. I guess I have a semi-similar bigboy version and a chibi variation.

I don't usually see hate for them, just feelings that they're overpriced, noisy, and overly worshipped. Imho I prefer smaller and quieter psu's. Their silencer line is the best one, the rest are just far too loud for a not so important improvement in line regulation. But I do applaud the quality of their stuff.

Nice Aria ! The Zalman 7000 seems to be pretty popular for cube rigs -- I have the B-CU version in mine.
