PC-PitStop.com - Soundblaster Audigy for $59!

Just a word of warning, if you already have a SB Live! that actually works (few do) or something similar, don't buy the audigy. You won't be able to tell the difference. The only reason I bought one was because my SB Live was very incompatible with everything in my computer, so I wanted something that worked. I wanted to shoot myself for supporting Creative after dealing with such a crappy product, but I was able to get it for $40 which is the only reason I went with it instead of the Fortissimo II. I couldn't tell the difference between the audigy and the Live! (from the few times it worked)...and I could just barely tell the difference from an MX300. $60 is a great deal, but $60 is still a lot to spend on just a sound card.

Man, that's pretty harsh. So you are arguing that SBLive's have a failure rate of 60-70-80%? That's ludicrous.

By all means, any potential buyers of the Audigy should educate themselves on its features, but its 24-bit processing, high-definition EAX, improved compatibility, "industry standard" status that game makers produce and test for, etc., make it certainly one of the top soundcards on the market today.

Btw, if you've got the PCI slots, you can have more than one soundcard installed. (You can switch between them in the "Multimedia" tab of Control Panel.) If you are worried about compatibility, you might want to have more than one soundcard installed. The MX300 (aka Aureal Vortex 2) card still has the best headphone sound of any soundcard, and it is definitely the best for Counterstrike and other Half-Life variants, so you might want to keep it simultaneously installed, armando.

To chime in:

The compatibility issues with Creative's cards are primarily on Athlon-based systems with a via chipset, especially the KT133. A lot of times just putting the card in a different PCI slot will clear up the issue.

As for the MX300, ever try to get one of those working under Win2K with a Via chipset? It's a NIGHTMARE. The card has an AUreal chipset. Aureal was bought by Creative (I think), and all driver support post-Win98 has been discontinued. I have an MX300 card sitting on a shelf, waiting for some real drivers to come out.
