Nice! You can't pirate an MMO but you can be a pirate in an MMO!

I feel bad for Crysis. I guarantee you it will lose big money for EA and Crytek, especially since it probably won't have a strong enough multiplayer component.

I am most disappointed by the UT3 news. I bought UT2004 and it rocked, and I know from my recently-arrived "Games for Windows Magazine (formerly Computer Gaming World) that UT3 will have a significant single-player component while multiplayer is scaled back from UT2004. Both Onslaught and Assault modes are gone.

Well it might not be as bad but I'd say it close, but console piracy is hot and heavy. The 360 has been cracked aswell as the Wii. By the end of the year PS3(if not alot sooner) will likely be cracked. Yeah most ppl don't know how to mod these systems but its just a matter of time before they are like the original Xbox's. Modded original Xbox's are common.

I don't understand though. Most ppl want UT series for online play and a key is needed to play online which requires you to buy the game.

Console piracy is negligible compared to the PC. Console pirates must weigh the risk of possibly damaging a console with possibly malicious and untested hardware and/or software and thereby voiding the warranty, and most people simply won't take that risk. On the PC all you need is a fast connection to download a small crack or cd image file and you're done.

Epic has said that even many online-centric games like UT still have the majority of players that play exclusively single player.

But yes I certainly hope that the market for multiplayer non-MMO games remains strong, and that's why Epic's statement about piracy hurting UT scares me.

Didn't they learn their lesson removing Onslaught and Assault modes from 2k3?

I play Single player mostly myself, but those were my favorite mp modes at LANs.

Piracy is NOT the *reason* they now develop for consoles

it is an *excuse*

the real reason is to make *easy money* for nothing

or the console sales may help them continue to develop for PC. expanding their market is simply a smart move IMO, considering it does seem like pc gaming is going downhill :(

I don't personally pirate PC games myself (mostly because BitTorrent is friggin confusing).
Piracy isn't as gigantic of an issue as these parties may be making it seem, but it is still a large issue. The problem is, no pirate is going to care because these developers make enough money off of their games anyways.

I have no moral problem with pirating but I'm not a good criminal.
I would get caught right away and I dont wanna meet Bubba in the shower just because I didnt pay for a game I could have purchased anyway.

I don't understand why people like yourself cannot fathom that piracy hurts the gaming industry. Yes, some of the numbers they come up with are ridiculous, and only take into account that every single person would stole a game would have otherwise bought it (which obviously isn't true). But to keep denying piracy hurts developers and greatly affects the future of this industry is just stupid, IMO. So, like I said, if you want to defend piracy, just keep your fvcking head in the sand, because you're doing no good.

I read PC game sales are declining and console game sales are increasing ,so that has probably more to do with it as well.

You recall correctly what you have read.

The overall game market in 2006 was $13.5 billion in North America.

U.S. PC game sales for 2006, with retail revenues over $970 million - a 1 percent increase over PC based revenue posted in 2005.

Pirates, phooey! They're just following the money, for which I do not fault them, but why can't they just say so & at least be honest about it.

"OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!! WE DiDN'T WANNA ABANDON THE PC VID GAME DEVELOPMENT MARKET, BUT THOSE NASTY PIRATES MADE US DO IT!!!!!!! BLAME THEM, NOT OUR COLLECTIVE GREED!!!!"

whatever

I don't doubt piracy has some effect on PC games sales, although I doubt its signifigant. However, I agree with appopin...they're going to consoles because thats where the money is. I can't say I blame them one bit either. Piracy has always been a problem with PC games, perhaps with a slight reprieve around the time games filled CDs but your average consumer still didn't have access to broadband. Don't tell me piracy just suddenly got a whole lot worse and started killing a previously solid industry because I don't buy it. Its a contributing factor, but it certainly isn't solely to blame.

I love how piracy is the universal scapegoat for content industry, regardless of music, movie, and/or games. It's really shame that even game developers now resort to the piracy excuse, when their motive/reasoning for action is something else. ID and Epic could've said that "console market has more money", and I could've respected that. I guess they didn't want to offend the PC fan base, and used the lame "ebil pirates" excuse instead.

At the very least, PC is still a great indie-platform. There's tons of fun and innovative indie games out there. There's no need to shell out for million dollar dev kits to make the next fun games. It just takes some creativity and ingenuity.

Comments made by Epic's Capps carried a similar tone. "PC gaming is really falling apart," he revealed. "It killed us to make Unreal Tournament 3 cross-platform, but Epic had to do it," adding "the market that would buy a $600 video card knows how Bittorrent works." Epic is currently developing Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in-house.

People will pirate no matter what. Console piracy is rampant too. It just takes a bit more time for maturity when next-gen consoles comes out. In a year or so time, Wii, PS3, and 360 will all have some piracy thrown in there. Hell... 360's protection was broken already.

I hate it when developers will blame technology for "piracy". Technology has enable them to reach their position today, yet once in such position, they will blame technology for their lack of progress. They can easily beat Bittorrent and other piracy measure, if they offer better service and content. If someone is going to pirate your game, he/she will stop at nothing to do so. However, there's always more gamer waiting to find the next-best game. They need to innovate and make their game appeal to more audience, instead of keep on b*tching about "piracy this, piracy that". If such trend continues, these developers will turn into the RIAA / MPAA.

Meanwhile, Firaxis designer and programmer Soren Johnson remained confident in PC development. He suggested that "game design on the PC is going to bend toward persistence," noting Blizzard's World of Warcraft is "successful because you can't pirate WoW. You cannot pirate an MMO. Period."

MMO can easily get pirated too. Once the server executable/code is leaked, they it's neigh impossible to stop anyone to launching their own private server. Instead of crediting WoW as example of anti-piracy, they should look at WoW as source of their audience problem. If so many people didn't devote their money and time on WoW, there's much more room for other games.
