I've been the computer guy for the family for the longest time, but i ended up with a job a state and a half away. My little brother asked for some help putting his computer together, which should be a simple assembly process. Here are the parts he has so far:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ (socket AM2)
2x 1gig sticks of Kingston DDR2 Hyper (KHX6000D2K2/2G)
250gig SATA Barracuda HD
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe

The parts we were planning on picking up on BF were a video card, dvd burner and a case. However, when i started looking at the mobo, it appears that it is Socket 939 while the cpu is Socket AM2. Will they work together? My research so far says no, but I figure it's worth asking.

There is a good deal on an ATI PCI-e video card at BB tomorrow, is there any reason to believe it will have a problem running on an nvidia board?

Right now my big concern is about the cpu socket and that we will have to ship something back to make it all work. I've been out of the loop on computer parts for the last 2 years, so i'm working as quickly as possible to clear this up. Please let me know if there are any incompatabilities I need to fix.

Cliffs:
Brother bought some PC parts
I am unsure if they all work together
Let me know if i have to swap stuff out

Thanks for any help :)

No, he will either have to buy a S939 CPU to work on the board, or buy a Socket AM2 board for the CPU.
I suggest going AM2 board, since he has DDR2 RAM and S939 only works with S939.

Socket 939 and AM2 are not compatible. Also DDR2 is not backwards compatible with original DDR. AM2 uses DDR2, 939 uses DDR. You're probably best off replacing the 939 motherboard with an AM2 part.

I will be looking around newegg tonight and tomorrow morning for something to exchange the mobo with. Could you recommend anything specifically for me? I guess i want to make sure the ram works too, and to get something with onboard video so i can debug it as problems come up down the road.

Do they make AGP slotted socket am2 mobos? Would it be stupid to go with AGP over PCI-E at this time? Only reason i'd use the agp for is with older cards.

Thanks again, i'm a bit saddened by the news, but we can work around it.

I can't give you an AM2 mobo recommendation, I'm sure someone else can fill in.

I don't believe they make AGP AM2 mobos and unless you had a really nice AGP card already there wouldn't be any point. Since you're buying new you'll want to go with PCI-E.
