PC Part's Compatibility

First off this is my introduction to anandtech. I have browsed the information here and found it so valuable that it inspired me to build my own PC which a few months ago would have been quite overwhelming. This is my first build so I am excited and nervous. I think I have a compatible, and good rig chopped together and am ready to order and build. However I need a confirmation that all the following items will work properly together. So any of you advanced PC junkies that has experience building computers please help me so I don't find out stuff isn't compatible once I order it ^_^

The list look fine it should should go together well....and yes...onboard 5.1 is adequate for most uses. I have used it on most systems Ihave built with very little trouble. Its a corner you can cut without much sacrafice. Having dual Optical drives it a convienience ..not a requirement if you want to nip another cost corner can the DVD drive. Good luck!!

Many people will try to nit pic your list...its there nature. The key here is compatibility...and there is no problem with the list.

And as far as installing Windows XP I just put in the disc after the set up and then choose the boot sequence and install from disk correct? And is the OS installation itself hard?

Also with the Mobo I have do you think the guide will be enough to help someone with moderate experience able to construct most of the PC or would I need advanced knowledge?

Have you actually ordered this hardware yet? If not, I have second guessed my assesment. SATA drives are great..but...as a first time builder I would rather see you use a IDE drive. SATA drives can be a bit quirky installing...IDE drives are a no brainer. You observation of install is correct...make your optical drive the first boot device...you will then Partion the drive and then format it (use NTFS). Install is nearly automatic after that point.

Can you recommend a good 16 MB Cache IDE drive that isn't OEM. I heard that OEM doesn't have the cables.

Also does the Mobo come with an Ethernet connection or do I need to buy a seperate card?

yes, when your computer boots you just need to make sure it boots from your cd drive FIRST in your bios, then the hardrive second, etc...be sure to reverse this AFTER everythings installed and working(will boot up a slight bit faster if your hard drives set first). Installing windows is a breeze, its pretty much all graphical and no harder then installing a new program from inside windows IMO.

the systems looking pretty nice, but you might consider the new Sapphire ATI X800gto(squared) as its possible to get it up to X850XT speeds fairly easy from what i hear...look for the link in the anandtech's news section

Well I'm not doing the 2x512 because I eventually want the ability to hit 3-4 gigs of ram.

I still need to know whether a Mobo has an ethernet connection built in, and also a good IDE drive with a 16MB Cache, no OEM.

your motherboard comes with the cables, you don't need retail...get an OEM drive...and yes, it has an ethernet port

So my Mobo would have all the cables needed for my Hard Drive, correct...will it also have the cables needed for my DVD and DVD RW drives?

Sorry I sound like such a n00b, you guys are the biggest help ever.

Well I originally wanted a 10k RPM but decided it was too much for too little at the time and decided the 16Mb Cache was the next step down. From what I have heard and read it offers a noticeable performace increase, are you sure I won't notice a difference ?

Yes...your motherboard comes with the IDE cables for your hard drive and optical drives (dvd). Those cables connect to the motherboard. You also connect the power cables to the drives from your power supply.

people will blab on about dual channel, but it's not a big deal. I have a 1 gb stick of corsair value in my system and it works great.

If you are going for lowest price...then it doesn't matter...just get what's cheapest
