I wanted to know if anyone could tell me exactly what these companies are doing when they sell people on speeding up their PC's. I know the usual tricks of disabling auto start up programs that are not needed in MSConfig, defrag the drives, run CCleaner, check for registry errors(I use CCleaner for this), virus scan, updates, etc. etc. Is there anything that I am missing? where is the magic?;)

The reason I am asking is a family member had this service done on there PC and said it helped, until there son used the computer again.
The story here is they have a newer gateway desktop running Windows 7. For reasons unknown to me it hangs up from time to time while browsing the internet. It will just lock up for a few minutes and then carry on as if nothing happened. I have left the task manager up in the background to see if the processors or memory where being overly taxed during these lock ups and I see no noticeable issues in those departments.

I was thinking it may be and internet issue so I brought my laptop on wifi and ran them side by side. My laptop would continue to surf fine even when the desktop was locking up. I have run every tool windows offers and the Webroot security they have on it says everything is fine (run in normal and in safe mode). Any pointer on test I can do to figure this issue out? Thanks in advance.

Ok I will give the chkdsk a run, forgot about that one. As far as malware/adware I ran the Webroot in safe safe mode and in regular operation and it did not detect anything I will look into the recovery disk though. Thanks for the information I will post back next week with the outcome!

If you must run a optimizer program, try Advanced System Care. It's free and does a decent job.
