Troubleshooting starter
1. Overview of the problem
My PC occaisonally crashes to a screen with coloured vertical stripes. After rebooting the PC works fine for a while but eventually crashes.
2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
It happens when I leave my computer idling for a long peroid of time. Putting the GPU under load does not cause the crashes. I have never actually seen the computer crash, I only see the striped coloured screen when returning after leaving my PC on for a while (i.e overnight, at school, or at work)
3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
I built it on Friday and was having the problem so I reformatted and re-installed windows but the problem persisted.
4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
The problem appears to be random. The only time I see the crash screen is after leaving my PC for a while.
5. I already tried these steps:
I reformatted which did not solve the problem. I have searched for others with this problem but have not seen anyone else.
6. My software:
* Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64
* Antivirus - None
* Firewall - None
* I'm on a clean install so I have very little software other than drivers
7. My hardware
* Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R
* i7 860 stock settings
* Radeon HD 5870
* G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH 2x2GB 7-7-7-24 1.65V According to CPU-Z my timings are currently 9-9-9-24 and voltages are JEDEC #4: 1.5V, JEDEC #5: 1.5V, JEDEC #6: 1.5V, XMP-1600: 1.5V
* Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan
* There was a bent pin in pci-e power connector on the PSU and my friend who was building with me bent it into position. I'm not sure if this could cause any issues.
8. Other information that might be relevant
GPU temps are 45-50 degrees on idle accoriding to GPU-Z
CPU temps are ~30 degrees according to Real Temp 3.00
