pc notebook that can compete with the looks of a macbook?

It depends on what you like - Sony and Asus make some nice-looking, well-engineered laptops. I actually bought a MacBook, though, after liking it better than its PC competition at anywhere near its price point. I initially intended to run XP through Boot Camp, but I find I'm really enjoying OS X and see no reason to bother.

I bought a Macbook last month and installed Parrallels Desktop. Installation is so easy and XP runs so smooth on it.

I actually like the HP dv2000/6000/9000 series look, though they're not as elegant as Apple's designs or some Sony models.

Probably my favorite non-Apple notebook design right now is the Sony VAIO TX. There's something about an 11-inch ultralight designed that way. And the VAIO TZ that will replace it in the summer looks like it could be even better.
