I got a New hd and it's spin noise is high pitched, I was wondering if anyone knows about some good sound dampening material i could put around it that would make the sound low pitched, so it'd be a little easier on my ears.
search the cases and cooling forum, there is lots of good information there. I'll start you out and recommend akasa paxmate, which only marginally reduces the actual noise, but noticeably lowers the annoying pitch. Cheap too at about $15.
And BTW, there are very few products you'd actually want to encase the hard drive in. There are a few products designed to encapsulate hard drives but dont know if they work with 7200 RPM drives as they run hotter.
Actually I have a western digital se 120gb hd, i returned the maxtor cuz that one was insanly loud, especially considering it was twice as loud as my 7000RPM CPU fan! Anyways, is there somewhere else i can buyt that stuff from, the site i found is the the UK and I live in the US.
2cooltek sells a couple different things. I've used the generic sound absorbtion foam in three computers and it works pretty good for quieting down that HD whine. put it in the case though, not on the hard drive.

I had the same problem. The store bought solutions were and are too expensive, so I made my own and it works superbly. Case Insulation Instructions
Some time back, I installed furnace filter material in the same way you have... What a difference! I love that little plenum the Antec front covers create at the intake fans.... easy to add filtration.
