PC Migration Software?

just ordered a new dell e520, will need to migrate all my stuff over. any suggestions on softare apps, including free ones, that work well or should i just do it by brute force method as i have in the past? also, i plan on using my external hd to move data around, is there a faster way direct pc to pc--will i need a special cable to do so (patch cable?)? thanks.....
 
Directories are easy - problem is within the registry, system files & DLLs. Usually only the installation packages know what registry entries and system files are added/installed.
 
if i'm going to use one of the migration applications and want to do direct pc to pc transfers, what sort of cat5 cable can i use, or will any cable work? same question on usb? thanks...
