Why not get a playlist going in winamp and just get a soundcard (SBLive) that has optical out for $45 (what I got mine for, new), and output that way?

i want the titling and the cool MD on comp :) I also thought it mentioned somewhere that it would store data as well.. but who knows.

its just something that seems so simple, yet sony still won't let it go down in price :(

couldn't they at least have keyboard functionality as a standard option.. not only for high end stuff?

hmm..

in Japan they sell a canopus MD drive kit, I can't remember the price, but it's definitely cheaper than $400.

also,
I own a sanyo MD boombox that has the same capability you mentioned. PC connect, and title/track editing from PC.

Sanyo Boombox

this one is $300. Quite neat, cause the boombox is very small and thin. Smaller/lighter than a typical hardcover college textbook.

Mine is the silver one.

That boombox doesn't support MDLP though. Unless you need the MDLP, why not look into getting the PC2?

yeah.
The MDLP technology was not out to public when this thing is released.

What's PC2 btw?

The MDS-PC3 accually labels with the ID3 tag of mp3's or the file name if there is no ID3 tag, but theres other alternatives for keyboard titleing, look on some MD message boards and you will find alot of people with diff hardware units to title with keyboard, like if you have a sony portable heres a good one Minidisc Titler, but IMO the Sony portable's are some of the worst recorders every, I just can't stand the terrible the record soundquality of my MZR90 even when hooked up with my SuperQuad Optical, thats why the MZR90 is only for editing afterwards while I record with my Aiwa bookshelf set! :)

the digital out on the sblive's isn't optical, it's spdif if i remember correctly. if you have a sblive, you can get digital optical out by buying a addon card from hoontech. different models of cards range from ~10-30

Elemental, which SBLive has an optical for $45? My MP3+ 5.1 sure doesn't. It's just got that crappy digital out for the Cambridge line of speakers. useless for me...

SBLive value bought at FS/T: $35
Hoontech DB II bought new: $15 or so

Total of $50, and you could buy a DB I that has only optical and coaxial out for about $7 I think.

So if you have optical out and record to the MD via optical cable it will also record the song titles???

I just may have to invest in a optical-out sound card then.

And the MZ-R91 has exceptionally good sound quality, at least with the headphones I use. The recorder can only be good as the headphones.

here's what i tried. hook up the daughter board to my Live (i tried 2 lives, X-gamer and MP3 5.1). hook my optical cable to the TOSLINK portion of the DBI and my Sony MZR55. hit record on the MD, fire up winamp... all i get on the LCD of the MD - NO SIGNAL. sigh...

No, all it does is have a standard volume set and a clearer sound, does not automatically divide songs without the 2second gap, does not title, just sound.

I beleive the R90 and R91 are almost the same, and its been said by many microphone companies that the sony recorder just doesnt have the dynamic range of most other recorders, plus I was useing the same headphones for both recording from my Aiwa and Sony and I could tell which was from which.
