PC lighting - software control?

Does anyone know of any solutions to control PC lighting via a software control panel? I'm thinking of adding a little bling in terms of maybe some cathode or LCDs in and under my case. A friend has a Dell desktop, one of the fancier ones, which has a neat control panel where you can change the lighting color etc. Is there a third party version of this and/or hardware controller?

I'm not a very advanced builder by any means but I think I'm finally passed "novice" and somewhere in the middle of "beginner"?

I do recognize that this is pretty silly, but.. hobbies are hobbies! 🙂

It could be done with LED based lighting, but CFL devices do not lend themselves well to varying voltage input. In fact, CFL bulbs have caveats not to use them in fixtures that have dimmer switches.

Different color LEDs can be turned on and off by software controlled switches. A simple example is the Saitek Eclipse keyboard lighting. It has to be done with an integration of hardware and software, IOW, hardware that can be controlled by software.

There is a new product called a Computer Color Cannon that does what you want and easily plugs in via a USB port and runs on driverless software. You can manually adjust the light by adjusting LED power levels and put it in various modes such as lava lamp mode or pulse mode, set a timer to automatically turn it off and on, and it also includes media player plug-in's so it can change color/light intensity to the beat of music like a color organ.
