I'm running a Home Theater PC, and I hook up the video cards HDMI output to the HDTV HDMI input. When I turn on the TV, the PC's display is stretched to the point where the outer boundary of the display is out of the picture. The PC is running 1920x1080 resolution and my HDTV is set to accept it, but the display is just a little to large. The PC's outer icons are just cut off in half. Am I doing something wrong?

check your overscan options in your video card control panel. also be sure that your television is set to dot-by-dot or whatever the input mode is called.

Without knowing what tv you have its hard to know exactly what the issue is.

My ST30 had the problem but it was a matter if changing hdmi size from hdmi 1 to hdmi 2 (hdmi 1 cuts off the edge a bit...hdmi 2 is 1:1 pixels).

My panny c2 (720p) i have to go into the htpc and scale down the resolution a bit. (intel onboard graphics)

Basically check if your tv has a 1:1 pixel mappng option (could be called many things) or hdmi size option. if not then just go into your video settings and scale down the resolution till it fits

I've got a Samsung PN51D550. The reason I'd like to use the HDMI input from my PC is, the TV will do 2D to 3D conversion, and I'd like to use it for some games.
I've tried to scale down the PC graphics, and I've looked at all the TV options. I still can't find out why it cuts off the edges of the display. Of course, when I use the normal PC input, the display is fine, but then I can't use the 2Dto3D.

Its the overscan settings, as has been said. Google it.

It annoys me that overscan still exists though. Overscan was necessary back in the dark ages, but now, I dont get it. 1080p is 1080p, it should never differ.

On your video card selection you should have 2 monitors, and one should be set to your monitor driver and the other should say something like Digital Television.

On Display settings for the TV it should be set to the refresh rate and have something like an Auto Aspect reatio setting. Mine is set up to 60 herz, which is the normal frame rate for video for a TV. It might be faster if you have the option, and your TV is faster.

Just set the exact resolution on your TV that your video card is set to. I prefer an exact match. It seems to work better than some automatic setting.

Do not exceed the specifications of your Computer's video card on your TV. If you do, it will overdrive your video card. So make sure you know what the Video card settings are on your computer's (Second Monitor) TV is set to.

I have my option set to clone my monitor. There are other options. If you are set to clone, then it uses the video resolution of your monitor. If you have a high end monitor and it is set larger than 1080p then that is what the TV will try to do. This may exceed the ability of some TVs.

Well, except for that fact that you still need overscan for standard definition. Too much extra information was hidden in that overscan area, like closed caption feed data for instance, which requires TV's to still cut out that area of the screen.

Thank you everyone. I am running an AMD 5770 and I just changed the overscan and now I have a nice display.
Does anyone have any specific ideas on how I should setup my 5770 with my Samsung 51"?

Thanks for the help everyone.

My LG Plasma is fine, but my 1080p LG LCD does it, and its a setting actually in the TV Tuner Settings. It has to be set to "Just Scan" rather than 16:9. You may have something similar.

Also overscan settings is often the culprit too in nvidia/intel/ati settings.
