pc hardwired to wrt54g can't get past router

Hey guys, I have a pc hardwired to a wrt54g, it gets a dhcp lease and anything but just can't get past the router. I can ping the routers local address, but if i try to ping google.com, i get no reply's. DNS does work because it resolves google.com to it's IP address. Any ideas of the top of your head?
Thanks,
Joe

Can you log to the Routers Menu?

If you cannot then your Network configuration is probably not set correctly.

If you can log to the Router, did you set the WAN parameters correctly and took care of the ISP authentication?

:sun:

Yea, i can log into the router and make any changes no problem. This wrt54g gets a DHCP lease from a wrt54gc router which is my main router. I'm setting it up as a wireless bridge. so here's the topology

cable modem ---> wrt54gc ---> wirelessly to wrt54g---->hardwired pc 1

I have another pc (call it PC2) connected to the wrt54gc wirelessly which gets out to the internet, and can also ping the wrt54g which is given an IP from the wrt54gc.

So, pc 1 can log into the wrt54g and ping it obviously.

PC2 can ping wrt54gc and can also ping wrt54g. So the problem is definately in the wrt54g because it is able to communicate on both sides of it, just not between the two.

Hey Jack,
I read that post inside and out man. Can't figure it out for the life of me. I read in there that ppl had the same problem, but there were no reply's with the answer. user12345 really knows what's going on with this, so i'm hopin he see's i can use a hand.

Have you flashed that wrt54 to 3rd party firmware, enabling client mode? Is it a version 4 or older?
Using client mode, it is very easy to do what you propose.

yea, i did use 3rd party firmware, it's a version 3 wrt54g. I followed that tutorial to a tee and everything worked fine, except for the computer behind the made bridge couldn't get out. However, since posting this, i use a different firmware, http://downloads.openwrt.org/whiterussian/newest/bin/openwrt-wrt54g-jffs2.bin

http://martybugs.net/wireless/openwrt/client.cgi this is where i read about this firmware, but never was able to config it. Because it worked, just like that, no configuration, nothing. The only thing is, i don't think it has an IP address now. I think it's just acting like a layer 2 device where it takes the wireless signal and allows wired devices to connect. I don't know how to get to an web interface or even telnet for that matter. Luckily, it's doing what i need, but i would like to see an interface. So if anyone is familiar with with at all, please inform me how i can get to an interface. Like i said, it's doing what i need now, but if i want to do anything like change the firmware, i don't know how i can.
Thanks,
Joe

what are the ip addresses being assigned?
if you are on the same subnet on both routers, it will not work.

for example
wrt54gc uses 192.168.0.1-254
wrt54g use 192.168.0.1-254
will not work. even if you do not duplicate addresses

post back you assigned IPs

A pc attached to the wrt54gc is getting an ip address of 192.168.1.101 mask of 255.255.255.0
The wrt54gc is 192.168.1.1 and a mask of 255.255.255.0
I don't think the wrt54g is even getting an address.
A pc attached to the wrt54g is getting an ip address of 192.168.1.108 mask of 255.255.255.0

So they are all on the same subnet and it's all working.

How can I check to see if the wrt54g is even getting an IP address? I check the leases of the wrt54gc and it does not show the wrt54g getting a lease. Is there any other way to see if it has an ip address?

It was really amazing when i upgraded the firmware, and all of a sudden, the wrt54g automatically bridged the wireless segment into a hardwired segment and all on the same subnet. I just want to know if i can get into the wrt54g to make some changes when the time comes that i need them. Right now, it's doin what i want just fine.

sounds like the new firmware did the trick and turned it into a bridge. no need to mess with it if it is working, i say 🙂

I totally agree! The firmware did it no problem, no configuration, nothing. The only thing is, what if i want to change the firmware down the road? Is there a way to get back into it even though it's not getting an IP?

check the DHCP table for the main router (and call this a "bridge" now to avoid confusion) it probably has an IP from DHCP?

Hey, I checked the main routers dhcp table, and the only leases are PC, the bridge doesn't get one, at least the table doesn't show it getting one.

that would make sense if it is operating in bridge mode.
in routing mode you would need to be on a different subnet, but in bridge mode, all machines can share the same subnet
lucky you!
