my pc hangs randomly, and I can only get back by switching off-on or resetting: confused;
It happens even when i'm doing simple things like open/close windows.

so far no problems when playing compat flight simulator or watching DVDs.

I clean installed W2K and SP1 yesterday with just the necessary devices. i.e. no sound cards,
no other programs just OS, NVIDIA Gforce MX latest drivers and VIA 4 in 1 latest version of drivers. AGP patch for AGP as suggested by AMD and Microsoft applied.

problem still there!!!

Any ideas? I would very much appreciate any suggestions.

thanks

system is:
Athlon TB 800 MHz
ASUS A7V rev 1.02, bios 1004a
mushkin 128MB 222 ram
ibm 30 gb 100 ATA
asus gforce mx 7100, drivers 6.18 from ASUS
sb1024 live, latest w2k drivers
pioneer 16x DVD
external modem
usb mouse logitech
keyboard logitech
power supply 300w from Deep (in AMD's list)

Sorry, can't help you, just wanted to say that I got the exact same problem.
Although it is more frequent when playing with 3D graphics.

I also got an ASUS A7V with an Athlon 800. Win2K, sp1, agp patch applied.
Still hangs randomly. I put my hope on SP2.
I have tried with different AGP cards, but still the same problem. One might try a PCI graphics card for some time, just to find out if it really is the AGP port that is causing this problem.

Anyone got any ideas?

I've got the same thing happening, but NOT in win2k.

Completely Random lockups in Mechwarrior 4, Homeworld:Cataclysm, Diablo II, Tribes...none in Red Alert2 yet :)

MB: Asus a7v w/ latest bios and Via 4 in 1 drivers, onboard promise ATA100 controller, NO onboard sound
CPU: AMD Duron 650, not overclocked, no hotter than 40 degrees celcius
Memory: 1 Stick, 128MB PC133
Video: Hercules Prophet II GTS 64MB. Tried leaked, reference and official drivers
Sound: Diamond MX300 (Aureal Vortex2 chipset) reference drivers.
Windows 98 with DirectX 8.0 and all service packs
HDD: IBM Deskstar 30GB ATA100 7200 RPM
NIC: Dlink 530tx

No IRQ conflicts (or shared IRQ's even)

I notice that you've both got A7Vs. Are you both using the ATA100 Controller? Are you both using IBM Deskstars?

Anyone use any other troubleshooting resources?

with my minimal set up (W2K + SP1), VIA 4 in 1 drivers and NVIDIA 6.31
I still have problems.

I've changed the BIOS setting to standard i.e. running in AGP 2X and it seemed to be ok.
I have to do some more tests before I say that all is well.
Apparently the 6.18 drivers from ASUS do not support AGP 4x (see the FAQ in the asus.com - december multimedia faq). They say that it will be supported in version 6.31. I however have the NVIDIA 6.31 installed and I have problems.

Anyone knows what is the situation with AGP 2/4 x and what the various drivers support?
anyone runs with AGP 4x without problems (in a A7V + A7100 MX setup)?

Ok, tried PCI graphics card yesterday, if anything the problem was EVEN more prominent. This rules out the AGP bus. The graphics card was a Diamond TNT 770. So it might be a problem related to VIA/AMD/NVIDIA of some sort. Oh well.
I'll try with a simple 2meg VGA PCI card tonight. I'll also try ripping out various other components as soundcard, scsi, networking.

To previous poster: I don't use the ATA100 and I don't got IBM Deskstar.

A official patch has been released from microsoft to adress lockups when using
the 3D functions on AGP bus in Win2000 and using a VIA chipset. I don't beleive this is our problem. It has to be something else. I'll continue testing.

Over and out, Tome

I have had similar problems, and to fix it in 98 I updated the asus a7v bios to 1005a and set the o/s to non plug and play then manually assigned irqs to the vid card and sound card, making sure they arent sharing, or if they are, with a port or device that i dont use.

I tried to use 2000 but the random lockups persisted and win2000 shares all the irqs (irq 9 i think) and being unfamiliar with 2000 i gave up after a day.

If anyone familiar with 2000 knows of a way to stop irq sharing im pretty sure this would fix it.

The problem seems to be a combination of amd/via/soundblaster live for me anyway.

My System.
athlon 850@950
asus a7pro (which is a cut down a7v)
pc133 128mb ram
Leadtek gf2 mx
sb live value
2 nics(ics server)

Any info would be appreciated as i really want to run 2000, its got to be better than 98se....

PS. many of my instability probs were solved by disabling jumperfree mode and setting dips and jumpers manually.

Heya Jumper!! Still no luck huh? Let me check around. I remember Pale was going to build a new system around that same MB. I haven't spoken with him recently. I'll e-mail him and see if he has built it and is experiencing the same problems.

don't thonk it's an IRQ problem. I currently have only necessary devises installed no sound cards etc.

I now run with AGP 2x i.e system to normal in BIOS and so far it's ok
