Problem, I have a PII 450 with the latest AWARD BIOS. After I installed the latest BIOS, everything work great, with 1 exception my scanner hooked to the printer port. There WAS a conflict that was easlily taken care of. Now when I try to use it I get the following errors
ERROR Starting Program

The SHELL.32.file is
linked to missing export SHLWAPI:SHRegGetUSValueA

I tryed to find it on the Win98 disc and nothing also did a search and found it, but when I try to open it up I get the same above message. Where or how can I remedy this??
When I clear the above message by hitting "OK" this message is right behind it

Program Files\Paperport.exe
A divice attached to the system is not functioning

However, I do have a scanner icon in the tasktray. Also when I installed the software for the scanner I get the first message ??

It (scanner) is in the printer port and has been direted there in the BIOS, also I have a printer in an USB port it works fine. I went to my registy and found my CAM still there IT DID use the printer port so I deleted it, and the software. Which was a shared file. Are these problems connected or I'm I looking at a different problems?

N E help PLZ to point me in the right direction

I've reformatted, ran a scan disc but nothing still the same problems. OBTW with the new BIOS chip there are now a a$$ load of options but still hav'nt solve the problems

also I'll add no conflics and it is not shareing an irq
:(

First, some questions:

Did you have this problem before you flashed your bios?
Why did you upgrade the bios?
Was there a specific issue you were trying to resolve?
Did you save your old bios just in case you need to revert to it?

I asked those questions to get a feel for what the bios upgrade was all about.

Now, have you reinstalled the scanner software? If that doesn't work I would reinstall Windows. Don't do a reformat or anything. Just reinstall on top of what you have now. If those two installs don't work, we'll go over the answers to the first four questions.

Thanks for the questions

1) no
2) mine were out dated by 2 yrs. OBTW it's a BIOS chip.
3) no, and now yes, the ERROR Starting Program

The SHELL.32.file is
linked to missing export SHLWAPI:SHRegGetUSValueA

and

Program Files\Paperport.exe
A divice attached to the system is not functioning

4) Yes

Yes I did do a reinstall on the scanner software
Yes I did do a reinstall of Win98

Still no help.
OBTW what does the first message mean?

Thanks Dan

An error message regarding the Shlwapi.dll or Shlwadi.dll file can be caused by a missing or corrupt file, so let's give this a shot:

1. From the Windows "Start" button, select "Find" and then "Files or Folders". This will open the "Find: All Files" dialog box.

2. In the "Named" field, type SHLWAPI.DLL and click the "Find Now" button. Make sure in the "Look In" field the (C:) drive is selected, and the box to "Include Subfolders" is checked.

3. When the files are listed in the bottom box, right mouse click on the one that is found in the "Paprport" folder and select "Rename" from the pop up menu. Rename the file to SHLWAPI.OLD.

4. Now right mouse click on the one that was found in the "Windows\System" folder and select "Copy" from the pop up menu.

5. Right mouse click on the Windows "Start" button, and select "Explorer".

6. When the "Explorer" dialog box opens, locate the folder on the left-hand side called "Paprport" and double click on it, the contents of the folder will now appear on the right-hand side.

7. From the "Edit" drop down menu select "Paste" to copy the file that was copied in step 4 into the Paprport folder.

8. Close all open windows and restart the computer.

Good luck!

since you flashed your bios, it's reset to default. did you enable the lpt port to use the bi-directional protocol, or in other words, did you set your printer port type to what is required by the scanner?

also, try uninstalling the scanner, unhooking it, and rebooting. if no problem, hopefully when you reinstall the scanner it will function properly.

and go over those bios settings

edit

and that easily taken care of conflict... tell us about it.

:( hey Dan, did every thing still nothing. The PC still is not detecting my scanner. Yes and it is directed to the ECP printerport 1 (LPT 1). The scanner is NOT in the device manager. when I go to START>PRINTER, it shows up when I open its properities and it's shows it to the above port?

I'm clueless. I did do the uninstall, unplug and so on, ctll, and it still won't detect the scanner. I set up my BIOS as before and still, niks. :(

and same 2 errors

From my searches for info. on this it looks like the other possibility could be a conflict with Explorer. Which version is on your system? Use Windows update and download a newer version of Explorer, if possible. While you're there you might as well see what other update you need and grab them as well.

Have you contacted tech support for your scanner?

:D Hey Dan finally, it works. I uninsalled the program, went and deleted anything and everything to do with paperport/Visioneer in the registry.
Re booted the system, reloaded the software, rebooted.Downloaded the drivers rebooted.

Try to use the scanner same errors. I did a START>FIND>FILE/FOLDERS. I went in and searched for the missing link. It only showed up in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM this thime, and NOT in the paperport folder like before. So I copyed the WINDOWS file to the PAPERPORT folder, re-booted and I works.

Thanks for the help Dan :D
