I have been having an ongoing problem with my computer that when I am downloading using torrent clients such as Azureus and uTorrent (but mainly Azureus) I have found that the PC will crash and display a strange blue screen message stating;

"A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Run a system diagnostic utility supplied by your hardware manufacturer. In particular, run a memory check, and check for faulty or mismatched memory. Try changing video adapters.

Disable or remove any newly installed hardware and drivers. Disable or remove any newly installed software. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007F (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)"

I have run memtest on my computer and have had it running several passes and it detects no errors on the PC (left it running overnight) and I haven't added any new hardware. I assembled this pc in May of this year and it can run high end games (Half Life 2, F.E.A.R., Far Cry etc) with no ill effects or problems at all. Indeed, it can run both memtest and prime95 for days without a problem.

However, when a torrent client is started, it will download, sometimes only about an hour and sometimes for days, and then this error message is displayed.

I have been watching uTorrent (as that is what I use now primarily as it has caused this error less than Azureus) and in particular the "Speed" Tab -> Disk Statistics and here it shows the "Write Statistics."

I have 2x Samsung SP2504C 250Gb 8Mb Cache SATA II OEM HDD in RAID 0 configuration, and it seems that the Cache on the HDD's reaches the maximum of 32MB and it is THEN that this error is shown.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do about this problem or indeed if may be what causes the system failure?

(I am using a DFI NF4 Ultra-D motherboard so that you know what RAID controller is being used.)

Cliffs:
-BSOD when cache exceeds 32MB
-p95/memtest stable

In this article, Microsoft says that STOP: 0x0000007F errors are usually caused by a hardware failure, and having all zeroes in the second parameter indicates a Divide By Zero error in memory. The fact that it happens when the drive's cache gets full seems to indicate that it may be a problem with the cache memory on the hard drive. Try running a full MEMTEST86+ scan on the computer to test the system RAM and then run a full drive diagnostic on the hard drive to see if the drive itself is causing the problem. Samsung should have a diagnostic tool available on their web site.

Definitely sounds like a problem with one of the hard drives (hurray for RAID0, double the chance of your system failing). Remember that Windows addresses pagefile space as if it is a contiguous part of system memory. Even if you aren't actively using up all your physical memory it may page things to disk. But it sounds more like it's a cache problem.
