Entering college 4 years ago, I was an avid pc gamer. I've almost completely stopped playing since then because I coudln't find the time to play them. Now that I've graduated, the geek in me built a kick ass core 2 duo rig complete witha 7900GT and a 30" LCD... ok partially for freelance design work and movies as well...

Ironically now that I have the hardware, it seems the PC gaming scene is in bad shape. I'm digging through reviews on IGN and GameSpot and it seems like nothing good has been released in a long while. What gives? Has everyone ditched their PC's in favor of a console?

Please tell me theres hope.

Have you been living under a rock?

Starcraft foo! There's a badass new patch which makes the icon ultra mega 3D which is all the rage right now.

Definitely play this game if you haven't yet, you will not be disappointed, unless you are very particular about lighting effects :p

I used to dig games like Duke 3D, Planecsape Torment, Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament, Battlefield 1942, Splinter Cell, HL2, etc. I gave WoW a spin and didn't have the time for it. I got into Oblivion during the begining summer but had to stop for projects. I'm giving Prey a shot, but I'm not finding much innovation. I've given up hope on any good NHL game coming back to the PC since EA's NHL 2004.

It seems there a quality xbox game being released at least every other month. If you look at the reviews for xbox games, there's a lot more being scored above an 8 on a consistent basis than PC games.

Well, if you haven't played it yet, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay is pretty good. Short, but good.

Strangely enough, I find myself being drawn in by older and older games. First it was CS:Source (okay, I started that one when it was relatively new), then Halo PC, then it was FFX, then Icewind Dale 2 (good times), then it was Baldur's Gate 2 (excellent game, just started a new game as an evil sorcerer), then FF7 (which, incidentally, is ported onto the PC). Maybe I'll break out the starcraft again soon.

i must agree with a previous post . . . you have been living under a rock. :p

IF you are pure FPSer [and by your list, you are not] it may have been pretty slim pickins . . . 'Riddick' was the last AWESOME fps . . . since then HL2, Q4, FEAR, Prey and Gun have attempted to fill the Void.

You mentioned Oblivion - get BACK into it. it took me 1016 hours to *finish* it with everything maxed at Level 92 [no cheats]. Extraordinary game.

B&W2 is an EXCELLENT Godgame/RTS now that it is patched. Bargin Bin also.

i could make a long list - just from looking at RECENT threads here. And there are GREAT upcoming games - Gothic 3 and BioShock come immediately to mind - just around the corner.

and quit reading those stupid reviews on IGN and GameSpot . . . hang around here . . . you'll learn much more

Battlefield 2 recently exited beta testing with the 1.4 patch, you could check that out. Or if you are looking for something bigger, Sony has a free version of PlanetSide (MMOFPS) now, but the game itself is old news:

Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition is cheap and has more story to it than Oblivion.

Star Wars: KOTOR I was a fun RPG-lite. KOTOR II is supposed to be good with fan-made patches to fix up Obsidian's incomplete work.

Morrowind was fun if you never played it.

I'm playing Chronicles of Riddick now and it's a very good single-player FPS. Get the patch from Gamespot (or other) to fix a problem with it expecting OpenGL 1.x instead of 2.0.

Man, I hear that game would have been awesome if Lucas Arts had not forced them to release it like 6-months too soon. Wasnt it shipped with the last chapter or so not even finished?

Far Cry, FEAR, Hitman: Contracts, Hitman: Blood Money, Deus Ex 2, and Thief 3 have all been released in the last four years. If you can't enjoy any of those games you might as well give up on gaming.

First, I saw, what is that 6 games... in FOUR years. Come on. .. and Hitman: Blood Money sucked.

Although you did forget a few other games.

The PC industry sucks now, at least for FPSs. It's too mainstream, too easy, and good releases are released far apart. Especially exclusives; they are almost non-existant. It's a real shame. I moved primarily to consoles, but I don't think I left the industry... the industry left me.
