I don't think there's really been any innovation on the console side, outside of Wii/Kinect, and people who like the classic games generally have better options on the PC side. I'm kinda interested to see if DICE's approach to BF3 willl bring people back to a PC first development cycle...if BF3 cleans up on PC and makes a shit ton of money (and it will), other developers may see that the PC isn't the readheaded stepchild they like too portray it as.

While I get the point, really....did we need another one of these?

Yes, because most of these threads focus on developer support for PC games or an individual user's undying devotion for PC games. My kids are the target audience the likes of nintendo, microsoft and sony are vying for - young main-stream kids. PC gaming is most definitely not targeting that very audience, yet my three kids have all opted to pass up wasting their time on a console platform, two of which are currently sitting next to the one that's playing on the PC just to watch.

That's got to say something.

Yes...and at some point (sooner than us old folks) they'll get bored of whatever it is they are doing on the PC and go back to the consoles for awhile. I do the same thing. You also need to take into account that they don't fit the "normal" scenario, since you presumably set that pc up for them and the games already worked fine so they didn't need to tinker/update/etc. To them a game is a game - and in this case, I'm guessing it really wasn't any different than booting up the consoles.

Clearly, your kids are geniuses and not mainstream at all.

PC gaming will be in trouble when (if) consoles have native keyboard + mouse support and upgradeable components (CPU, GPU, etc.).

Then again, that'll make "consoles" just SFF PCs with a lot of proprietary parts. ;)

My kids are either on the PC or on a the IPod playing games. Once in a while they will place CoD or MoH on the PS3.

Yes, it says something: they are wasting their time on the PC instead of a console (lol).
Actually, I am being facetious here, but there is a point to what I am saying.

I support and prefer PC gaming, but you seem to imply that console gaming is a waste of time and PC gaming somehow magically is educational.

Granted, there are still probably more educational and intellectually stimulating games on the PC, and the PC can be used for other intellectual activities, but a game is still a game.

Not trying to rip you or your kids. My grandson plays a lot of games on the comp and is very smart and does well in school. I am just saying, depending on the game choice, a PC game is not necessarily superior to a console game as far as intellectual development is concerned.

Actually, during the school week, they don't play any video games at all. They do their school work and read a good bit. They also play board games and with their toys and such if they have free time. My girls are both in Girl Scouts, and my son was in Boy Scouts before we moved (no troop here). There are also other extracurricular activities they do.

Right now, they're taking a bit of a break from the games. My girls are out walking the dogs and my son is emptying the dish washer.

You point is not lost, but they are most definitely not wasting the day away.

Yet another PC Gaming is dead topic... however this has an unforeseen twist.

I, for one, am getting out of here before this one gets ugly :D

Having said that, despite questionable health, I grew up on a diet of Spectrum, Amiga and PC games, only digressing to the console to play FFVII and Wii Fit!

Wi Fit: The most angry I ever got at a game, basing its assesment of fitness on how well you could stand on one leg. Seriously, I was a dedicated runner and lifting weights at the time I tried the game and it said my wife, who is extremely sedentary, was more fit that I was. BOGUS.
Granted, the exercises could be useful, but the assesment of your fitness level was the craziest thing I had ever seen. (end of rant)

BBC2 is the best FPS out there right now. State-of-the-art graphics and realism...I think BF3 is going to be HUGE. Our 200+ member clan plays BBC2, and we will get BF3.

PC gaming is a niche market IMO. At least at the level most of us here play at. PC gaming is a different animal than console. I see it as more of a hobby. An expensive hobby. It's not just about playing games, but also building and modding, tweaking. At least that's where I get my enjoyment from it over the PS3. It's a different animal.

The Wii appeals to people who don't know much about gaming or hardware. The 360 and PS3 appeal to the hardcore who are just about the games and nothing else.

That's my take on the console vs PC debate. Your mileage will very. Regardless, PC gaming is out of its slump now. Good to see it back.

PC gaming will always loose in a popularity contest just because not many people want to or know how to mess with hardware/drivers. Especially kids, no kid is going to his/her parents and say I need a gaming PC for $1000 that I will need to spend $300 on every 2 years to upgrade my GPU.

PC gaming is for adults who have disposable income and treat it as their hobby. It can be very expensive and doesn't have the experience that xbox live has either.

I recently started paying PC games and love playing shooters on the PC. I wish there were NFL and NHL options available on PC allowing for complete modding. But if you really look at it a xbox arcade can be had for $150 and even sometimes $120 when on sale or $100 used. A 2 year old 4850 = $100 and then as you probably know, not most kids know how to or feel comfortable upgrading PC components. Consoles take care of that for them. Its the same reason why people buy pre-built home-theater systems as they just don't know how to put together the parts themselves.

I been hearing people say PC Gaming is dead or dying since the day I got into PCs and that goes back to 1993. It was probably said before then too. The OP is entitled to his opinion but as far as I'm concerned its BS. It was BS then and its BS now. Find a new argument please.

Its not dead and it will never die but It is played by a few. It can be compared to Golf. Golf isn't dead, its just expensive and thus not as popular.

Gaming is dead, or at least it has been for me the past few months. I just haven't seen anything I want to play. Not on pc and not on consoles. Right now I don't have a single game installed. It seems like all the games coming out are the same ideas just with different graphics.

I think Homefront should be a good game. We'll wait and see as I'm in the same boat as you. Haven't been playing anything since finishing COD BO, BFBC2, MOH 2010, and Metro2033.

Golf is popular, it's just boring to watch on tv (or in person for that matter)

How much is it played compared to Soccer, basketball, american football, and baseball? And who is it played by? If you look at these questions and you will understand why PC gaming is less popular and gets less attention of developers.

Companies target kids, thus PC games will always be less popular and get less attention from game developers. Its sad but true. I myself never played and PC games when I was young because I simply didn't have the knowledge of all the parts and my Dad was not a computer wiz either. So he just bought me a console when I wanted games.

Now that I am old and have a job, I can afford PC gaming, and I love it. But that is what PC gaming is, it is for adults only. This eliminates majority of the gamers sadly.

Now what would be nice is a console with upgradable GPU (like a simple drop in and no fussing with drivers), Mouse and KB support as already mentioned. That would satisfy everyone's needs.

Which is why given the options of Xbox, Wii and DS, my kids are upstairs playing on the PC right now.

Its the same way at my house. Own all the consoles save for the ps3, the last time anyone spent any length of time playing them was when Reach came out. The computers are the go to format for gaming here. Rarely ever get begged for games from gamestop but if there is something interesting on special on steam i hear about it.

If the PC's target audience is mainstream kids, that just reinforces my thoughts that PC gaming is dead. I'd rather have games that kids couldn't even begin to understand or play well enough to be entertained by, thank you very much.
