Another living room gamer here.
xbox 360 controller plus wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up to 46in Samsung over HDMI.

Over vga, resolution is 1600x1200 but the text is much clearer up close.

My PC is hooked up to a 50" Samsung 1080p. I like it so much that I sold off my nice IPS monitor last year.

Luckily, the couch and coffee table are just the right height for KB/M but I do have a Logitech F310 for those rare times I need a controller.

Would it be possible to connect a gaming pc to a large tv(46inch)? Would the resolution be fine and text readable? If I decided to do this I would use a lapdesk to hold the kb&m. Also what about a 32inch 720p tv? Would it be worth it to play games on that?

Depends on the connectors, but almost certainly yes, there's lots of options for PC <-> TV connectors, the most common of which is HDMI, you might need a DVI-HDMI converter if you don't have native HDMI out on your graphics card.

Most modern day video cards will support any arbitrary screen resolutions and refresh rates so whatever TV you get shouldn't matter.

Text will be readable depending on distance, you can change the OS font size anyway, although when in game it will vary, some games have HUD scaling to help with this.

OP, I have a gaming/HTPC hooked up to the "PC" connection of my 46" Samsung and it works great. I love playing SS# from 6 feet away. I have a 2.1 sound system and a Rosewill wireless mouse/keyboard combo hooked up. The only problem with gaming with this rig is finding the right seating arrangement and (other than a cardboard box) a surface to put your mouse/keyboard on.

There is a guy on youtube that games on three 46" TVs. He says they are excellent to game on. Barnacules1 is his YT handle.

I have considered a furniture maker should make a computer gaming living room desk.

Or, a trackball set on a arm rest or beside you with keyboard on lap?

PC games tend to have very small subtitles and UI text compared to console games, which are designed for the TV in mind. So some PC games can be a real challenge on the TV.

I game on my 1080P 47" HDMI with a 7770 card.

Notice no problem. I even run UT99 no problem-o... In this case it might be high end lcd monitors had the upper hand in image quality but... Bigger is Better for me. I sit about 12' away from my TV. HDMI is the only way to go. I also use it for surfing the net and am typing this on my couch right now. Use an IO gear built in trackball wireless keyboard to surf and just a regular wireless mouse /keyboard to game on.

Thought about a controller but it's hard to get use too. L4D 1/2 is fun to play on a bigger screen.

This is true, I sit about....12' from a 70" and some games just don't work well due to their smaller UI's (LoL is a good example. Requires too much precision with small items on the screen). It works well for consolized games though and many FPS games.
