PC games that require the disc to be in the drive to play

I don't really mind it, but it's much, much better than the crap DRM that many publishers are implementing. When I found out that Dragon Age: Origins will forgo intrusive DRM and use only a simple CD-check method I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief (even though I have yet to encounter any bad issues with DRM, it's better safe than sorry).

I am not going to lie, I have torrented the occasional game, generally if the maker hasn't put out a demo, I am not going to take a monetary risk (since PC game return policies vary wildly from store to store) on a game unless I can dip my feet into it first.

The latest game I bought was X3 since I had heard good things and played it a bit on my roommate's computer a few years ago, I knew that it was something that might interest me. So I spent the money, got the game and installed it. The DRM was broken. I had to update the DRM that was included on the disk since what was installed supported neither Windows 7 or 64 bit. Windows 7 I can understand, but not supporting 64bit? And then not even telling me that was the problem. It just said, 'insert disk into drive'. So yea, CD checks blow.

Never found it a problem, never even occurred to me to think of it as a problem - I suppose I got used to the prehistoric days when you ran the game right off a floppy disk and didn't have a hard drive! Or when you had to put a music cd in the drive to actually listen to it. Much prefer it to all the stupid overly-complicated DRM that requires a net connection. Was a problem on _one_ occasion, when the disk broke in half in the drive and I had to pay significant money to get them to send a replacement for a game I already paid for!

All of my games are legit and almost all of them are cracked. As a paying customer my optical drive shouldn?t be molested every time I want to play the game.

And no, Steam isn?t the answer either; GoG is, because it has no DRM.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find neither Cryostasis and Call of Jurez BiB had any DRM.

In this day and age, no DRM is certainly a very pleasant surprise, which is unfortunate for all of us.

yeap all my games are legit. Nearly all of them are also cracked. i hate having to swap out cd's just to play a diffrent game.

I've never had a problem leaving the play disk in one of my optical drives. In fact, I've never done it any other way...

I don't think I play a single game now that uses a disc. In fact, I don't think I own a game that isn't on Steam already with the exception of Battlefield 2 which is not going to require a CD once patch 1.5 comes in a couple of days. Using the CD/DVD is annoying but there are always ways around that...

I like it, insofar as it provides some reduction to piracy, which is fair to the producers of the games and by making them more profitable, means more games are made.

Yeah, hate to swap them and needing to have a pile of dvds near the computer.

Try Alcohol 52% Free Edition

Does it work for multiplayer games? I already use gamecopyworld for single player.

Considering the installed game remains unchanged, there is no way that an anti-cheating measure would be triggered.

Sweet, thanks 🙂
