Have the Sapphire Radeon Vapor-X 5870 card, and running the out of date (?) Catalyst 8.95's from February.

Any particular drivers esp good with FPS games, ie, BF3? The latest are not always the greatest...

Actually the latest stable drivers are the best; the only ones to avoid are the beta drivers.

Think the latest are the WHQL's 8.98.2... Catalyst 12.8, from July...

I DL'd them, but not installed yet.

12.8 was a good release for the 7 series i'd imagine it'd be good for the 5 series assuming its the right one.

Is there a problem with the 12.9 betas? I have those installed on my system, very recently, but have noticed no issues yet.

You wouldn't want to use Catalyst 12.8 due to known stability bugs, it's blocklisted (won't provide hardware acceleration) in GPU-accelerated applications like Firefox for this reason. Your best bet would be Catalyst 12.9 Beta.
