PC Game Pad recommendation?

So, who does a lot of PC gaming with a pad? I'm looking for something that can play through relatively modern games (up to about stuff released in 2005) as well as emulated classics. The 360 controller would be perfect if it wasn't for the absolutely abysmal d-pad.

Anyone have any recommendations?
 
I have a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2. I like the d-pad because the cross isn't completely separated and you can roll your thumb around for fighting games. *shrug*
 
Regularly I would recommend a 360 controller but then I read the D-Pad needs to be good so that's out of question.

A Playstation2 pad is your best bet, the d-pad is second only to the cross design by Nintendo, the rest of companies have designs based on a circular d-pad which sucks ass (though that cross over circle from Logitech doesn't look too bad).

Actually you can, you just need to install a small driver and of course have a bluetooth receiver in your PC, I guess the DS3 would work as well but rumble may be tricky to get working.

Yeah I have a Logitech Dual Action (basically the corded non-rumble version of what you have) and I like the D Pad. I use it for old capcom fighting games and it works pretty well.

DO NOT get a playstation pad if you play fighting games. The fact that the d pad is seperated into 4 parts makes it very hard to do quarter circles, etc with them.

Yea, I thought about that when I picked up my PS2 controller earlier...
 
Really, if you're going to play fighting games of any kind, don't most of the main console controllers kind of suck due to lack of face buttons?
It's especially obvious in things like Killer Instinct or the Marvel/Capcom Vs. series where combos go weak-medium-strong. Using the shoulder buttons just doesn't feel right.


On the bright side though, a PS2->PC convertor is quite inexpensive, and PS2 guitar controllers have gotten quite inexpensive. Can be quite nice combined with Frets on Fire, if you're into those kind of things.

Get a 3rd party USB controller for the PS3 or 360.
I have the wired MadCatz Xbox360 controller and the D-pad is awesome.
Used it on my Xbox360 until I sold the stupid thing. Gave the buyer the original wireless Microsoft controller and kept the 3rd party controller for my PC games.

I've been using the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 for a few years and really like it. Its a dead-ringer for the PS Dual Shock 2. If they had the XBox360 wireless PC kit back when I bought the Logitech, I would've bought the XBox360 controller instead.
 
Does the 360 gamepad work with a good number of windows games out of the box or do I have to tweak some settings for it to work? Thanks.
 
I think it's the best PC controller out there; it works out of the box w/ "Games for Windows" and should autodetect on older games.

If anyone is interested in these (windows 360 controllers), I have enough MS Live Search points to redeem for it. PM me if you want one.

I'm not going to be playing any fighting games...mostly lots of NES games and SNES RPG's/Action RPG's.

I never installed anything, Windows found it and installed it as a gamepad device.
All the buttons work in all my games, including NES and SNES emulators.
