PC freezes when HDMI connected to HDTV

PC freezes when Radeon 4830 HDMI connected to HDTV. The desktop does show on TV and PC.

primary monitor is 19" lcd (vga) and want to use a Sony HDTV (hdmi) as second monitor for Windows7 media center.

don't connect HDMI to your HDTV then !!!! HDTVs only support HDTV cables. HDMI cables, are for HDMIs.

tv has hdmi slot and have previously connected a PC w/intel on board video using a dvi to hdmi cable but the resolution was terrible.

More than likely you need a custom resolution with a 1 to1 pixel mapping of your TV, not as an extended monitor of your desktop lcd display.
