PC freezes up during games?

Friend of mine built a PC last week. I don't know all the parts, but the video card is a XFX 6790, memory is 1.5v, and power power supply is a corsair tx 750.

Anyway, he installed counter-strike and apparently the computer freezes up when trying to play CS and any other game. Also during stress tests it freezes up.

He thinks it is probably the video card?

Any ideas? Do you need more info on the parts of the PC to help?

By "trying to play", I assume you mean the machine locks up while the game is launching.

My first guess is that it's the proc. Or more precisely, the heatsink that sits on top of it. Could be that it wasn't properly installed, or perhaps you forgot to apply the thermal. The proc gets too hot too quickly if the HSF mounting was done incorrectly, which can lead to immediate lockups.

It could be that the video card fan is dead, or is dying. If you O/C'd the videocard, it may have been too much (I once had a vanilla 6800 that I unlocked and overclocked, and I had to clock down cuz the memory on the card couldn't handle it and it would freeze up the system).

So yeah, specs and config would be nice to help narrow down possible solutions
