Every 5 seconds my roomates PC acts like it has an interrupt. Every thing freezes for 1 second then everythign works for 5 seconds. This happens over and over and over. It is an Athlon 700, with windows 98.
This started happening after he installed IE 6 SP1... I removed it and it still does it!

Thanks!
Dave

Could use some more sys specs. RamsHD and such. and when was the last tiem it was restarted? Defraged? do you have all teh other Updates?

also clean up Temp files and such and anything else that could be bogging it down

do he happen to have a MS Optical Mouse?

Some of them were recalled for several reasons, including causing a machine to freeze all the time.

enable dma for all your devices.

r-click my computer -> properties -> hardware -> device manager
-> ide/atapi controllers -> primary ide channel -> advanced

then change pio only to dma if available.

do the same for secondary ide channel

Only computer I've ever seen do something remotely like that had ECC and Non-ECC memory installed together. Sounds like a demonic possession to me. Best treatment calls for pouring a glass of holy water (read Vodka) over the motherboard to drive away the evil spirits. Some holy smoke (read Cuban hand rolled cigar, possibly of the Romeo & Julietta variety) couldn't hurt either. Let us know how it turns out?!

Specs, specs!!

Problems could be a bad MS Intellimouse (as mentioned, some older models were recalled, that offer is over now), bad drivers, bad configuration, or even a hard drive on the way down.

1. format the hard drive
2. fresh installation of the OS

Specs shpouldn't matter no hardware has been changed in the last 2 months.
it has a CR-rom, and Imation CD-RW 4x, Its an asus mobo, athlon 700Mhz slot A,
256Mb PC100. ethernet. WD 10GB hd...

Its really wierd. You start up the PC, everything seems to load fine, but when it plays the windows sound it skips then it freezes for one sec, fine for 5 seconds, freezes for one sec, fine for five, wash, rinse, repeat... Everything works fine in safe mode.

I will try checking out the DMA stuff. He does have an optical mouse, but it is a logitech. I removed it and replaced with ball mouse...

Thanks
Dave

had a logitech on a similar setup, not likely the mouse

formatting....the all magical cure for any windows ailment

would suck if it wasnt a windows prob tho
id try the defragging stuff and cleaning out temp files and the like
quality ram? maybe its dying, bro had some that died slowly, very annoying

If I fire up the sysmon it looks like this
_^_^_^_^_^_^_^^_^_

heh
I cant see anything else wierd.
Is there any utility to see all processes runnign under windows 98?

Dave

Okay.. well it has somethign to do with obtaining an IP address. wierd.
I reinstalled all the drivers and protocols for netowroking.
the only thing that seems to work is booting in safemode, then restarting.
if you shut down again everythign is messed up again...
