Hey guys, I've been getting hyped for the oculus rift, and was wondering if it was worth it for me start a whole new build, or if simply just upgrading a few things would be sufficient.

My system:

i5 3570k @ 4ghz
Asrock Extreme4 z77
8gb Corsair ddr3 1600
Corsair AX850
OCZ Vertex3 SSD (sata3)

I recently sold my gtx770, since I haven't been gaming much recently. I plan on picking up a 980ti probably around Christmas since I'm not really in any hurry since the oculus wont be releasing until the first quarter of next year. My main concern is whether or not my CPU/chipset is worth upgrading or not.

Any advice from you guys is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best advice: Wait until it comes out and then upgrade to whatever you can afford at that time. We don't know if Oculus will be delayed or if something great will come out 6 months from now.

OP, most likely your system will be fine with the addition of a GTX 980-class GPU, but you never know what the future holds. Now, if you're looking to get back into PC gaming before the Rift, then we can have the conversation about a new GPU today.

Well, I had originally planned to start a new mini-itx build from scratch, just for the hell of it. I was going to buy 1 part every other week or so, and just take my time enjoying it. I've started sleeving some extensions for my future build for fun, and was really just looking for something to do as a past-time; not buying everything at once like I normally do.

I had planned on using the evga Hadron air case, that way i would be able to travel with my pc/oculus rift fairly easily...and it would look sexy as hell :) But if simply getting a new video card with my current setup will basically yield the same results, with less style, I might just get a new case(ive been eyeballing the define S) for kicks, and get the video card later down the road. And save myself a lot of money. I just don't know if the i5 /z77 will bottleneck the 980ti or leave me handicapped in other areas I may not be aware of.

A high clocked Ivy Bridge is still a good gaming GPU and will keep from bottlenecking in any current game, so you should be fine.

Thanks for your input I have a 1TB RAID-0 for the OS and a 4TB storage drive. Yes, that would transfer over to the new build. Also, Im planning 16GB RAM, my question was to do 4x4GB or 2x8GB
