PC for graphic design, flash etc.

A friend of mine is looking to build a PC for graphics flash etc. His budget is 1500-1700. I was thinking going Pentuim D, but really I know nothing about Intel. Do you guys have any suggestions?

This is what I thought of. I need suggestions on mobop and the other parts chosen. Also should he have the files he is working with and stuff liek photoshop cratch on the other drive?

Intel Pentuim-D 3.0GHz - $372.99
GIGABYTE GA-8I945P-G - $129
XFX PVT43PUD Geforce 6600 - $123
Western Digital Raptor 74GB - $186.00
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400GB - $300
Fuji Plus FP-988D Silver-Black 19"
Antec Solution SLK3800B w/ 400w PSU - $98
pqi Turbo 2GB (2 x 1GB) - $167.00
NEC ND-3520A - $44
LITE-ON 16x DVD-ROM - $23

He will get a second LCD around christmas. I was thinking about a Dell 2001FP.

Integrated graphics is a really bad idea with an LCD, as you can't take advantage of the monitor's DVI input, and the analog output on integrated graphics usually sucks bad enough that even an LCD will be blurry when connected to one.

Here is an affordable Gigabyte motherboard, and for no gaming a card like this should suffice. On the LCD, just make sure to get a true 8 bit panel (usually indicated by "16.7M" colors) as opposed to a "16.2M" 6 bit panel.

Would you need dual DVI on the video card to run dual monitors? Also wouldn't a CRT be better for this kind of work? He may want an LCd though, but I am not really sure. If so would you suggest getting a Dell 2001FP?

A CRT can be better in many instances (color quality not the least of which), unless he wants to spend $6000 on an Eizo CG220 (ha ha). Some LCDs have reached the point of "acceptable" for most serious graphics professionals, though the ultra-fast gaming LCDs that everyone lusts after on these forums do not qualify. He only needs dual DVI if he plans to run two LCDs, though since a dual DVI card can always be turned into a dual analog card with the two included adapters, I see no reason not to get one if he has any inclination at all that dual LCDs may be in his future.

In this case, the price increases a bit... This is the most affordable Dual-DVI PCI-E card that I could find; note that the passive cooling will help noise levels as well. 🙂
