PC for Digital Photo Editing

Hi all,

I am new to these forums and this is my first question to ask here. I have some knowledge of PC hardware, but very little knowledge on how it all works and how to troubleshoot. But that's not important for this question:

I am getting ready to buy a new PC that will be primarily used for Photoshop editing of photos, some gaming and website creation. I need advice as to what kind of CPu (whether AMD or Intel) which ram, HDs video card, monitor the works. Any and all advice is apreciated and welcome.

Also, I have noticed that there are a few essays on anandtech about how to take better photos. Yet these are no benchmarks as to how CPUs and the like preform in such programs as Photoshop. I was hoping that perhaps Anandtech could make a set of benchmarks for photoshop use, or to add photoshop benchmarks to the future hardware that they test.

Thank you for all of your help, Stefan.

Build or Buy? Desktop or Laptop?

Both AMD's and Intel P4's are equally capable, but AMD's use ~1/2 the power, so they run cooler and less fan noise. Do you use RAW software?

I will be. The plan is to get Adobe's Creative Suite (student discount here I come) and then to get Adobe Camera RAW. Down the road I might switch depending on how ACR works for me, but I have still to test it out.
