I own a PC-DVD 12X which I have been running on my machine for a long time now. It has been working just fine, up until about a week ago. All of a sudden, it stopped working. In the device manager it still shows it as being installed and working fine, and I made sure all the cables inside the machine were still hooked up.

The problem its been having is that when I put any type of cd media into the drive, it thinks about it for approx. 30 seconds, then pops the media back out. No error messages pop up. I'm kinda at a loss, and can't for the life of me figure out what the poroblem is.

My system is an athlon 900mhz, 416mg RAM, windows xp, soundblaster gamer soundcard, geforce 3 video card, and a creative PC-DVD cd-rom/dvd drive.

Flash the drive to the latest firmware revision, if the drive still refuses to read discs then it's probably just reached the end of it's lifespan, the laser may have gone bad and therefore can no longer read discs.

Sorry to sound like such an idiot, but here it goes...."Flash the drive to the latest firmware revision", can you explain to me how to do that. Does this mean update the drivers? I looked on creative's website for the latest drivers, but it said there were no drivers for that device with windows xp. Maybe your talking about something else.

Go
here and pick out your model DVD-ROM from Creative and follow the directions for flashing the drive. Some drives allow you to flash from windows instead of floppy which is uber-simple but the floppy is pretty easy as well. Good luck and post back with results :)

From my favorite store it's $35 MICROTEK/LITE ON 16X-DVD (Bare Drive). And it's from mwave so you know the shipping and ratings are good.

*sorry, i thought it was $33*

on that same page they have the regular liteon for $39. Still a good price considering all the generic dvd deals out there start off $59 - rebate - rebate get-it-for-$20-if-you're-lucky kinda deal.
