PC DVD and Hardware Decoders

I remember when PC DVD - Roms were suggested only if you purchased a Hardware decoder to go along side them... But now a days I don't hear anything of those decoders.

What happened? Are the software decoders just as good?

Modern PC's have more than enough processing power to take on software decoding, that's why you don't need dedicated decoder cards anymore. You can still find hardware decoders like this (reviewed at Tom's Hardware).

Software decoders today are better then the old hardware decoders.
