PC drops off the network

I just moved a computer to a different area of this home/office. The network connection is confirm-able and good, in that room it's in now, but the PC drops off the network after a very short while. Other computers connected to this LAN in that office stay on the network at all times, just as the old machine that used to be there did.

I had this motherboard, processor & RAM in another PC that my wife was using, right up til two weeks ago. Then, it was always on the LAN and always accessible.

Now in it's new case and new office, this PC will only be accessible from the LAN right after it's restarted. A half hour later, sometimes an hour or two, it drops off the network and you cannot find it by searching (until you restart)

This is XP Pro with no screen saver enabled, and also hibernation is not enabled either. I searched thru the BIOS setup screen looking for a 'wakeup on lan' setting but there is none. I also have it set to NOT spin the hard drives down. Basically all power saving devices are turned off.

I've disabled the onboard LAN port and installed a 3-Com NIC in it's place. Same exact result. It works for a short time just as with the onboard one....

Right after you (re)start the computer, you can log in with Remote Desktop just fine. You can share files from it just fine. It gives you no indication that there is any issue at all, until it suddenly becomes invisible.

I have also tried different Network Cables - same result. The NIC lights up green, when it's plugged in. The router shows that port active too, even when the computer has dropped off.

Yet (up until) two weeks ago this machine was in another case and another office in this same LAN ... and it was always on the network

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Other than "Remote Desktop" (but why did yo move the PC if your going to RDP to it?)..did you try anything else?

can you ping the IP of it from another machine?
did you check the event logs on the machine?
what do you mean by 'searching' for the PC? is that all thats 'invisible'?
does start, run \\PCName\ShareName work from another PC ?
you mention sharing files, maybe your hitting the XP 10 connection limit?

Tried access via Local Network, as we normally backup/share files

can you ping the IP of it from another machine?

NO PING once it drops off, but otherwise yes

did you check the event logs on the machine?

NO, do not know where they are

what do you mean by 'searching' for the PC? is that all thats 'invisible'?

Under NETWORK, you can SEARCH for a PC

does start, run \\PCName\ShareName work from another PC ?

NO, it's not available

you mention sharing files, maybe your hitting the XP 10 connection limit?

NO that would not apply, it's just one machine at a time trying to get to it. Either this machine I'm typing on, or my wife's computer. One or the other. Besides, it should allow both of us to log in at the same time if the limit is 10.
