PC doesn't recognize my new slave hdd!!

Just installed a new Maxtor 120gig drive as a slave, chained to my master WD 100gig drive. Windows XP booted, but the new drive did not show up in My Computer. I ran Partition Magic, and it saw the new physical drive, but it was not allocated as a new usable drive, and it only sees 32.5 gig, not the full 120.

I'm running XP Home on an Athlon 2000 ASUS mobo.

Help?

for security reasons, new hard drives do not automatically show up in windows xp.

you have to go to Control Panel, Adminitrative Tools, Computer Management, choose Disk Management on the left pane, right click the drive, and choose something like Make Partition Active .. or something like that ...

Oh whoops, sorry about that ... I read your post a little too fast =P

Did you deleting all partitions in PartitionMagic, and then recreating a new primary partition that spans the entire drive?

The new drive has not been partitioned yet. And, I can't really do that, because the computer only sees 31.5 gig of the drive. I don't have the option of partitioning beyond that, because the computer doesn't know it's there...

Well you won't be able to see the drive until it is partitioned and formatted.

the size you are getting is all too close to the 32GB clip, check to make sure that your hard drive does not have a special jumper configuration that limits the size to 32GB....also you may want to try updating your bios if it's a couple of years old.

Hmm. Not sure about the jumper config. The only jumpers I see on the drive are the master/slave/CS config. I have tried it set at both slave and CS. Am I missing something?

As for the BIOS, this is practically a brand new board (bought in December), so I doubt that's it. Worth a try, though....
