PC doesn't boot

I just bought all the parts for my new PC, they include:

3.2Ghz P4 (Northwood)
ASUS P4C800-Deluxe
ASUS 256MB 9800 Pro
1 GB Corsair XMS RAM (2x512MB)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Western Digital 120GB SATA HD
550W PSU

I got all the components hooked up and turned it on for the first time last night and... nothing. Not a peep, not a beep. I checked the power supply (I have a PSU tester) and the PSU is fine. I reseated all the components and checked all the cables, everything looks like its connected right. The LED on the mother board lights up but power doesn't seem to be going any where. When the power supply is plugged into the motherboard even it doesn't work (it's two fans don't spin.). As soon as I unplug the PSU from the MB and complete the circuit with the PSU tester the PSU and any thing directly connected to the PSU come to life (Fans only).

Any idea what the problem is? Am I just missing something really stupid?

the fans you speak of, i'm assuming they're plugged into the mobo?

you might have a fried board. sounds kinda wierd, not sure what to suggest. if the fans are plugged into the headers on the mobo, but don't spin even when the "power" led is lit, then there's something seriously wrong

edit: it's probably that crappy intel stuff you got ;)

Are you sure you plugged the P4 power connector into the motherboard?
It's a square power connector with four connections.
Verify that you have the CPU seated properly?

I'm having exactly the same problem. The Motherboard LED comes on. The LAN port light comes on. My keyboard lights flicker. But there are no fans running, (I have 3, and they are plugged in) and the monitor doesn't show anything.

I have an Abit NF7-S, Lite-On case with 400W power. I just bought all this stuff and I have a lovely light show!

Any more ideas, or do I just need to RMA to New-Egg?

did you guys use the risers when you installed the motherboard? Is the motherboard making contact with the backplate? If so, the motherboard may be shorting. try to boot your system 'outside' the case. Other than that, I'm not sure.

good luck.

I fixed the problem. It was my own stupidity. I was off one pin on one of the connections. At midnight, when I was hooking everything up, it looked correct. After work, with better light and a clear head, I saw the mistake and corrected it.

atye, you may want to check out your CMOS jumper, it may be on clear rather than normal. It's one of the things I checked on my board.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Another thats always worth trying is to short the power switch on the board before you put it in the case. Just use a small, metal screwdriver to make contact with the two case switch pins on the motherboard to make sure that it turns on before you put it in. That way if it doesn't turn on when you put it in you know you just got the little cable pins wrong.

That would have saved me a few hours of aggrevation the other night ;)

I'm having a similar problem with my computer.
I have a P4 comp. with the Intel850 chipset.
I have two motherboards, one which is new. my power supply is also new, and i have used a voltmeter to check it.
The weird thing is, that I have gotten everything to boot correctly on the new motherboard when the P4 4-pin extra 12v plug is NOT plugged into the mobo. I was under the impression that the motherboard wouldn't boot without it....
but when I have the 4 pin 12v plug in the motherboard, nothing starts up, not even the fans...it does this on both motherboards. with my older motherboard's led coming on. any suggestions? i've taken out of case and stripped down to just processor, ram, vid card, and power supply and same thing....
thanks for any suggestions.
