PC decides to randomly stop working

Yesterday I used my PC, everything was fine. I turned it off and went to bed as I normally do. I wake up this morning to find my computer lifeless as I press the power button.

I have changed nothing. Everything is connected correctly. The mobo light comes on when I have power plugged in. But I get nothing when I press the power button. I have a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D and so I tried pressing the power button on the mobo and still nothing.

Any suggestions?

That's a tough one. Without any indication of what happened, it's hard to diagnose a problem. Is the computer plugged into a surge protector?

The only thing I can think of, is to strip it down to essentials (ram, hd, and vid card) and try to get it to post. If that doesn't work, you're going to have to start swapping parts probably starting with the power supply.

Also, how old of a pc are we talking about here?

DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, Opteron 165, Mushkin XP4000 RAM, X1900XT, Western Digital 160GB hard drive.

Pretty new. I guess I'll try stipping it down. And yes, it was plugged into a surge protector.

I tired turning it on without the ram, hd, and video card and got nothing. I don't think its the PSU or mobo because the mobo light comes on when I have the PSU plugged into the wall. This is about the worst possible timing and I need this fixed SOON.

I'm gonna borrow a PSU from a buddy in the next two days and plug it in and see what happens. If anyone has any suggestion, shoot it my way. Thanks

My DFI board is extremely picky. Sometimes just taking out a hard drive will make it not boot. I usually just clear cmos and start over. Sometimes Ive had to leave the clear cmos jumper on, and take out the battery for about an hour or so to let it fully drain.

Spend all the time you want diagnosing, it's highly likely your psu.

if clearing the cmos didn't work, the best course of action, blackrod thinks, would be to start swapping out parts one by one. blackrod thinks that working on the computer outside of the case would be a good idea. to make sure it's not the case causing a short.

Have you got the internal beeper connected up if so I would expect to get some stop code Pre BIOS this might give you some idea what is wrong
