Here are the specs of my comp .

Intel p4 3.06 Mhz
MSI Mobo 915P/G Combo
XFX GeForce 6600 256 MB
160 GB SATA Hard Drive
512 DDR 2 RAM
Win2k Professional
Onbaord sound is being used.
LG DVD writer combo etc.
LG 17 inch Studioworks Monitor

A brief history of the computer

I bought it less than 2 months ago . Initial issues included SMP getting toasted ( probably due to the voltage problems in India ) and no sound. Both were resolved . THen I noticed the temperature being way too high . CPU temperature was averaging 70 degrees celsius . At the point the computer was crashing alot . I assumed its due to the temperature . Thus I got a new fan installed + a new 450 W SMP for the computer . I also purchased an APC 500 W UPS . The temperature certainly came down to the mid 50's which I think is acceptable ( Right ? ).

Remaining Problems

The computer is crashing alot . Usually it occurs when I click on any button , be it dial or a sign in. It occurs suddenly and the screen goes blank and the CPU emits beeps signalling a reboot.I disabled automatically rstart in the Startup and Recovery settings but the computer doesnt give any blue screen errors . I think its probably faulty RAM or the OS . Any ideas?

The second problem is very peculiar . THe computer starts propery goes past the loading screen etc and the desktop opens with the taskbar getting setup , all the desktop icons coming on screen etc , etc . Heres the catch - the computer locks up IF I dont move my mouse prior to it being totally readly .If I move my mouse , everything boots up normally and I use it ( until the next crash ) . If I dont , the computer completely locks up with the mouse and keyboard rendered dead .

I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me some good ideas on how to resolve this problem.

Regards.

You can use memtest to check the ram, run it for about 12hours, if no errors, your ram is likely good to go. Your temps before were definatly too high, mid 50's isn't bad. You could try and do a repair install of the OS, that will repair all the system files in case there is a problem there. I would also run the hard drive manufacturers diagnositcs tools on the hard drive. By SMP, are you refering to the power supply(PSU)?? What brand is your PSU, wattage alone means nothing. A good name brand 350w is far better than a generic 450w. Did you put the computer together yourself or was it pre-built?
