PC connected to receiver, how do I get rid of the hum?

My PC is hooked to the receiver through a RCA Y cable, and there is horrible hum. The PC and receiver are plugged into different sockets, because they're on opposite sides of the room. Is there anyway I can get rid of the hum? Will connecting the two through my soundcard's digital output get rid of the hum?

Sounds like a grounding issue to me.

Digital output may get rid of the hum.

check the ground on the two outlets, make sure both are well grounded

If it's a ground loop problem, a digital optical cable would be a way around it.

Connect both sockets to the same ground? Or plug both PC & receiver into same plug.

I have a similar problem.

Ground Loop Isolator. This will solve your problem.

optical digital or put them on the same plug somehow (extension cord from a power strip to the reciever? ie: firehazard)

As mentioned already, either swtich to optical cables, or pick up one of these.
