I want to build a PC on which i can run DAWs (mostly Pro Tools). I have heard that the PC components like the motherboard, the processor, the sound card, etc. have to be compatible to run properly. I don't have much idea which ones to buy. My expenditure limit is $900-950. Can anyone help me out with this?

The configuration i am aiming at is:
Quad core i7 processor
8 GB RAM
1 or 2 TB HD

Also if anyone can tell me is there any real difference between running Pro Tools on Windows and Mac?

Thanks.

you will not have a protools pc for a grand. (nowhere near)

the first thing you should do is just go on the protools website and read about the different types of protools that exist, that will give you some idea.

that link is bs. protools can run on a C2D, and it does - what do you think we have in our macpros.

OP, you do not need a server grade machine to run protools, but you do need some sort of audio interface.

essentially you are looking at :

the PC, and peripherials, around $1200. you might be able to cut down on the price a little.

one of 3 versions of protools; i assume you just want to "make music", so that leaves you with 2 choices out of 3.

protools express is around a grand ($1.000) and you need some sort of input, generally an M-Box, which will run you about $300.

this is the most basic protools setup, and does not include a DAW, meaning it doesn't have any external physical controls, so no faders, mixers, and so on.

since you said that your budget is "around $900", i'll stop here.

OR, you can build a cheaper PC, download Reaper for free

buy some sort of input box, and you can start making weird sounds in a minute or two.

ofc this doesn't include the price of microphones, instruments, cabling, audio monitors,
soundproofing, and so on and so on.
