When I assemble my PC, should I assemble EVERYTHING, including non essential preiph's like a sound card and raid card, or should I put those in only after things are up and running?

step 1...

Only place vid card, 1 stick of ram...no fdd or hdd's...Goal here to make sure it post and to go into bios and check settings and watch temps and voltages a bit...

step 2...

hookup fdd, 1 hdd, and the main cd-rom you wish to install from...Goal here is to successfully install os...make sure you can successfully restart and cold start the computer...install all mobo drivers, install any patches, then install vid card and direct x 8.0 or greater...

step 3 thru how many...

one by one add pci cards and other hardware...This is the best to make it clear when the system has issues with a device and then make it easy to identify what is the culprit, the added variable...

This is how I do it...has worked many times flawlessly for me...

Do your tweaking and ocing after it is all setup. Too many times idiots here in the forums start ocing and tweaking at step 2 then run into issues with step 3 and makes it take much longer to get stability and eventually have to back off to near pre step 3 levels to achieve stability. many devices don't like ocing so no sense wasting time until all devices that will be present in the final system are in...

Start with only your Video card, hard drive, floppy, and CDrom, then add other components, this makes it MUCH easier to trouble shoot along the way

<< Even better do step 1 before installing the mobo in the case. >>

exactly, also a good idea, is to do step 1, place the mobo on something non-conductive (the mobo box will do) hook up psu and plug it in, and short the PWR pins ( you could connect the cases cable to it if its long enough) and verify that it posts before you install the mobo into the case ... common problem is , once the board is installed, people see that it doesnt post, only fans turn , this is usually because the board is "shorting out" on the case, or something else .. well hope this helps .. good luck ..

You might want to install the vid card as part of step one. Otherwise seeing if your computer will post or installing the OS will be a bit hard...

see Duvie's post. amen brother! If people would just follow this they would save alot of headaches for themselves and others on the board. if things don't go smoooth intalling a driver/patch it gives you a "heads up" on possible probs., you know where to start. please do not plug everything in at once, and then start pisin' and moanin when everything does not work perfect.
