PC boots up to IE opening an unwanted webpage

Queasy

I'm asking this question for a co-worker and for my own general knowledge. One of the websites she visited on her home PC (Win2K Pro) brought up a bunch of popup-ads and apparently one of them inserted something into her system somewhere. Everytime she boots her PC now, IE opens up and goes to a webpage that she doesn't care to see.

I told her to check her boot.ini and startup. Was this correct or is there somewhere else she needs to look?

Thanks

I would definitely look into the start up. There is a good program for win2k called "Startup Control Panel 2.7 by Mike Lin" floating around on the net. Try and find it and download it. The program will show a detailed list of everything set to run at startup since win2k does not have MSConfig.

Step One: Delete all cookies, internet temp files, clear History. Control Panel > Internet Options > click buttons shown clearly on first tab
Step Two: Check Start > Programs > Startup folder for unwanted program shortcuts. Delete.
Step Three: Click Start > Run. Type "regedit" (without quotes), press Enter. Expand \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete unwanted/suspicious entries. Do the same under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Be careful not to delete anything important.
Step Four: Avoid those nasty pr0n sites and if any site pops up a "Do You Wish to Install" window and you're not sure what it is, tell your friend that for God's sake click NO.

Also, go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download Ad-aware. Very nice little anti-spyware utility.
