Pc- Audio Problem--Help

I keep hearing a static/popping sound from my speakers.

I used my headphones and I still hear it so I don't think it's the speakers. If I put a movie on the pc I can hear it but, the static/popping sound is louder. I unistalled and re-installed the audio software (Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit) multiple times along with restarting the pc and it still comes back.

I have 5.1 surround sound. Dell Dimension 5100.

I opened my pc to look at the hardware and I don't see any problems.

Please help, what do I do?

Once I turn the speakers on the static/popping sound comes on.

Anything that releases sound. It would do this.

Before it wasn't this bad. It would come off and on skipping around when I play something (movie, music). But, now it just doesn't stop. Unless I put something on, a movie or whatever that plays audio. Then the static sound starts to skip around (when i play something) when I stop playing the movie (have to keep turning movie on and off) then the static sound just stops. But, when I play it again the static sound comes back.

I can hear the music or movie but, the popping/static sound overshadows that.

Do you have integrated sound that you could try to try to narrow down the problem to a soundcard issue?

Could be electrical interference from other components. Had that problem with an old laptop.

What yea mean?

I'm thinking it's the sound card. Not speakers or software.

I'm wondering if you have integrated sound on your motherboard that you could enable and test instead of the soundcard so you can be sure that the SB is what's causing the issues.

If the interference still exists using integrated sound, then your problem could be something besides the SB. If the problem is eliminated when using integrated sound, then it's the SB for sure that's causing the issues.

I just switched speakers and it still played the same sound so it's not my speakers. It has to be the hardware.

I bought this pc bout a year ago so i don't exactly remember what my motherboard specs are.

Do you need to know my soundcard specs too? I use Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit software.

I'll open my pc and check, is that ok?

you dont need to open the case up to see if you have onboard sound.

Look in the back where you plug everything in. Is there those small round spots for speakers anywhere else on the back besides that card? like maybe up by the USB ports where you plug in your printer and keyboard and all of that stuff?

If there is, then you have onboard sound.

There are 3 small round spots for my speakers in the back. The headset port is in the front.

The usb ports are in the back for keyboard and mouse. There 2 other usb ports in the front.

Ok, you have integrated sound then.

If you want to go through this process of checking to see if that works alright for you, you'll need to disable the SB as your sound device and enable onboard. To make sure there aren't any conflicts, you might want to just uninstall the SB drivers and physically remove the card before you get the onboard going.

Once the creative stuff is all uninstalled, you should be able to enable the onboard sound (I'm not sure if you have to do this in BIOS for the Dell) and Dell should have drivers for your 5100's onboard sound on their website.
This looks like the one you need actually http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R114282.EXE

I greatly appreciate your help and I'm not knowledgeable like I used to be on this stuff.

So I uninstall my software for my sound? Like the Sound Blaster. Remove the Sound card in my pc. Put it back in then click the link and install it?

Little confused. Maybe a step by step explanation for retards (mostly me)?

Again, thank you very much

I had the same problem with that card a few years ago. Turned out to be IRQ sharing with the soundcard. I moved it to another PCI slot and voila, problem solved.

Try this first 🙂

I know I read somewhere how to do that. You got a link or something that can show me how again.

You just need to open the PC, take out the soundcard (have you worked with PCI cards before?) and move it to a different open PCI slot on your motherboard (if it has one)

I got it to work. I restarted my Pc pressed f12. When to the menu with all the Pc specs and stuff. I went to integrated sound and it was on. I turned it off (don't know why, just felt like doing it) and now the sound is back to normal. Nice and smooth. Man I love life .
