PC audio fades in and out

Don't have another set of speakers to test with and I'm trying to figure out if it's the old 2-channel Cambridge Soundworks speakers or old Soundblaster Audigy card. Is it true if volume fades in and out (rather than either on/off completely), it's the speakers rather than the audio card? Could it be the wires (connects to the subwoofer, which I've ensured are making good contact)? This happens at random times, whether on local files or on Google Play Music so I'm sure it's not the files.

^ bump. This hadn't been a problem at all for months and now it's back. Happens across all apps and within games, but it's not constant throughout the day.

Do you have an embedded sound card on the MB you can enable and move the speakers to see if the issue persists?

^ good idea, tested and it's definitely the speakers.

This is strange. I've never experienced this issue before but maybe the amplifier in the speaker system is causing it.
