PC attempts to dial out when accessing LAN printer.

Hi,

As the title states I am having this problem with one of my pcs on our work LAN. The LAN consists of 8 pcs, running a variety of OS' (W2kPro, XP, NT4 and 98se) The printer is a Brother 1470n and has also been trouble free.

This particular PC is running 98se and has given me no problems with the exception of the one named above. I have searched MS' database with no luck so far and have also searched here.

I had this problem once before with a different program and someone showed me a simple fix which I unfortunately didn't save. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Go into the network properties and makesure that the TCP/IP protocol bound to the ethernet adapter is set to be the default protocol (it is on the advanced tab in the TCP/IP-->Ethernet Adapter properties I believe).


I have seen things like this when a dial up adapter is added after the NIC or when AOL is loaded. The dial up connection becomes the default and any time they try to connect to a network resource, it tries to dial.


Just one idea.......



edit: This all assumes you are running tcp/ip. The same could hold true for netbeui or ipx/spx if you are running those. Just set the default protocol away from the dail up adapter.

The PC that the printer is connected to needs to have Win9x drivers installed on it also...............when setting the share on the printer the OS should have asked if you were using any other OS's and then it will install 'shared' network drives for win 9x machines................the rest will work properly because the are all running an NT kernal

Actually it does have the 98 drivers installed, we are running 3 other 98 machines on the LAN and they all work just fine. My office pc is running W2k pro and one of the pastors has XP on his. The server has NT on it.

Also the printer is not "shared" it has it's own ip address and the individual pcs all see the ip address as a printer port.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to carefully look over the other pcs settings and see if I can find anything that doesn't match between the working ones and the non working one..


What really gripes me is that I had this problem with Seti driver and someone in DC gave me the answer within about an hour of posting it. And I can't remember what the fix was!!!!!

If you have a "default gateway" set on this printer, remove the "default gateway" setting.

That's all I can think of.

Nope that isn't the problem either.

I have not had the time to dig into it for a couple of days, will try to do so in the next day or so.
