Sorry I have been out of the loop for a very long time. I have a donated build that I need to finish. The processor is a E8400 Wolfdale running on a Gigabyte board with P43 chipset that supports 1066. Since 6400 ram is still relativity cheap compared to 8500. How much of a performance loss am I going to see running 6400 over 8500 with the E8400.

almost none unless you are trying to overclock the board to levels that warrant the DDR2-1066 speed.

DDR2-800 CAS4 can be had for the same price as DDR2-1066 CAS5. You may be able to push the 800 modules up and keep them at CAS4.

8500 is only noticeable in terms of performance when it comes to overclocking...

Thanks, I was hoping to pick up a couple of Crucial 6400 4 gig kits today but Frys decided to claim that they are out of stock when they had plenty in stock. I noticed that DDR2 ram prices have doubled in the last three day over at Newegg.
