So it's been awhile since i did the ebay/paypal thing. I sold a laptop on ebay last night and buyer (27 feedback) paid via unconfirmed paypal (looks like he just signed up, name on paypal looks like his wife's name).

Without thinking i just accepted the payment and did a transfer to my bank account but then i started worrying about fraud. I told the seller i'm waiting 3-4 days for the transfer to clear but is that even going to make a difference? did i make a mistake here in accepting the payment?

Any suggestions?

aren't all new sign ups considered "unconfirmed paypal"?

Even if the funds clear, you could be liable if the funds were setup via a stolen CC
Send the funds back.

Inform the buyer that you need a confirmed account or a USPS MO.

Unconfirmed means no Paypal protection. Such as it is.

I just set up an account last week actually. You have to wait like 2 days for the transfer to show up in your bank account before you can move funds to the Paypal account. Once this happens, you need to verify with your bank. Once that happens, you can add money to the account...and that takes another 2-4 business days. Nevertheless, it took me about a business week to set it all up.

yes, never sell/ship to an unconfirmed address. you don't meet the requirements to be protected from fraud, you didn't follow paypal's guidelines. if the guy is a scammer (many laptop buyers are scammers) you are doomed

if you have not shipped it yet, you need to cancel the whole deal and start over

For future reference, you can set-up your PayPal preferences to automatically reject payments from buyers with unconfirmed address. Also, next time you sell something on eBay make sure to state in terms that you do not ship to unconfirmed addresses. If I were you, I'd refund the payment and move on.

I called Paypal this morning just to verify that i have 0 protection. I went ahead and did a refund on the payment although it's going to take '4-8 days' since it's coming back out of my bank account. Told the buyer to confirm his paypal account while the refund clears and to resend me payment once it's confirmed.

I wasn't ready to ship the laptop out to an unconfirmed account. Thanks for the tips folks. Sad thing is i said payment only via confirmed paypal in my auction and people continue to ask me if i take MO and the buyer who didn't bother to confirm the account prior. People just never pay attention/care (or scam).

laptops are scam magnets, the next thing you were going to get was an email asking you to ship it to nigeria

I'm looking for a machine for my daughter. PM the laptop specs and your asking price to me.
