Needs to send ~$1000 to a friend of mine in Hong Kong,
any hidden charge?

Does paypal rape on the exchange rate from USD to HKD?
The total fee would be 1% cross border fee + $3.5 hkd withdrawal fee?

I can send $1000USD like that?
Western Union wants $76 fee, what a ripoff.

there are many ways to send money and the cheapest ways are all online. If you dont want to transfer acount to account (bank to bank) or you to HK merchant account or stuff like that, Paypal is fine besides the 1% conversion fee. Since you said no credit card, paypal to paypal transfers should be free i think....
